DAVIDSONVILLE, MARYLAND — The perennially popular tomato, a favorite of backyard gardeners everywhere, is being celebrated this year at the Third Annual Annapolis Tomato Festival and Chesapeake Chili Cook-off at Homestead Gardens in Davidonsville, Md., on Saturday, August 27, from 12pm to 6pm.
The family-friendly event celebrates ‘all things tomato,’ with many activities throughout the day, including a salsa competition and a fastest pizza eating contest, sponsored by Ledo’s Pizza in Edgewater, Md. Attendees can sample fresh tomatoes and tomato-based foods, listen to live music and purchase additional food and beverages such as pizza and pork barbeque.
Individual tickets are $10, and family tickets for up to four people are $25, with children under 10 admitted free of charge, and the event will take place in rain or shine. Ticket purchases cover admittance to all areas of the Annapolis Tomato Festival, including the three competitions, music by Andy Poxon and The Sly 45 Trio, and food sampling.
The Chesapeake Chili Cook-off entry fee is $25, and is open to individuals, restaurants and organizations to compete for the top prize of $1,000, as well as more than $250 in gift cards to local businesses and the coveted People’s Choice Chili Trophy. The $10 fee for entering the Salsa Competition applies to either individuals or restaurants/caterers, which will be each judged in separate categories. The Ledo Pizza Eating Contest is also free to all participants.
A portion of the profits from the Tomato Festival and Chili Cook-off will go to support Save the Coconuts, an Annapolis-based nonprofit organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness to fight breast cancer and make life easier for those living with the disease.
