    Pedal power

I recently received the following press release about Dr. Clifford Andrew and his fund-raiser that might inspire you. You may not keep a good man down, but it's going to rain on a parade when Hanna blows through. However, at least he's going northwest, away from the storm. And he's got some elevations to achieve along the way.

    Best wishes, doc!

     < p>< p>

They say you can’t keep a good man down.  After an injury while training for a triathlon and then being hit by a car while riding his bike in preparation for another competition, Dr. Clifford Andrew of ...

    Conserving land in the city

    Dear readers:

I found a website that might help you find cheap gas in Annapolis.

    Try http://www.marylandgasprices.com/Annapolis/index.aspx

Thought you might want to see this press release from the City of Annapolis about conservation efforts, too...perhaps you can get involved. Do you have land you'd rather conserve than sell? Or build on?

For immediate release from the City of Annapolis.

The current climate of shrinking real estate values and lessening demand for new houses is creating a unique opportunity for land conservationists. Land trusts are buying acreage that was originally slated for development and preserving that land as open space. ...

    Cheap gas and the bridge

    Get gas cheap!

All of us who want to save money on purchasing gasoline should be aware that it is selling just for today at $3.39 a gallon regular at Mark Bowens Parole Services station on the corner of Solomon Island Road and Forest Drive, because the station is closing. In fact, when I called to confirm, the phone was answered by the Verizon guy working on changing phone numbers up on a pole!

But my source for this information tells me not to be dismayed – because Bowens is moving to the site of Lowry’s on Forest Drive near ...

    Crime: up or down?

Here's notice from the City Police about crime in the city. I guess the easiest message is lock your doors.

Yesterday, we released crime statistics for the first sixth months of the year. While the total number of crimes as compared to the same period in 2007 was UP, we are gratified that VIOLENT CRIME is DOWN, significantly so. Most of the increase in overall crime is due to incidents of Theft, especially Petty Theft.

We make every effort to deter, investigate, and prosecute Thefts, but the fact is that many of them are VERY preventable. No crime is the ...

    A Fond Farewell

The church was full Wednesday morning this week when we gathered to say goodbye to a friend, mentor, teacher, and actor. Talented Elizabeth “Beth” Dowling Whaley, an icon of the local arts scene, died July 30 at Washington Hospital Center, a few days after being striken with a cardiac condition.

St. John Neumann Catholic Church, with its lofty ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows, looks to seat about 1,000 people, and I would guess about 800 people were there to support her family and to share fond memories. I told my companion in the pew  that the ...

    Traffic and more

One of my previous blogs asked for suggestions on transportation in the Annapolis area - I mentioned a shuttle to run us around in the Parole area, and also an elevated system on West Street - no one wants to lose the popular Poplar Trail in Germantown area, I'm sure - so do you have any ideas?  I absolutely hate West Street going from four lanes to two, especially during rush hours and we are backed up almost past Wendy's - though my sympathies are with the Homewood residents who don't want fast tracking of vehicles through their neighborhood. But ...

Say hi to the travel writers in town

You might run into some visitors this coming week - so smile and welcome them - they will be writing about us down the road and it will mean dollars into our economy.
It will mean a lot especially when some businesses like Merritt are closing down (I've heard that Northwoods is joining the belated as well).

    Travel writers convene in Annapolis

The fifth annual Media Marketplace, held by MATPRA (Mid-Atlantic Tourism Public Relations Alliance), is set for Aug. 4-7 at The Westin Annapolis hotel. About 75 travel writers will meet with representatives from destination marketing organizations (DMOs) to discuss ...

    Tip from the police

Today*s Crime Prevention Tip from the Annapolis City Police
Car Navigation Systems are popular items for thieves. We reported yesterday that at least one thief scopes out his potential targets during the day and returns at night to do his work. Two things may help with prevention 1.) Remove the GPS from plain sight when parking your car, and 2. As always, be vigilant for and report any suspicious persons.

One of our employees had his stolen from his car while he was here at work - broken window - broad daylight. Tuck your vaoluables away - lock them ...

Quickies - no, not that kind!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention two very IMPORTANT events happening this week which are a lot of fun and involve food! So here's some quick announcements.

    1. You can get your tickets at the gate for the 63rd annual Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast this Friday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. The city's biggest summer event and the best darn crab feast in the world, I kid you not, benefits local charities and non-profits. Tickets at the gate are $65 each.
It's best to arrive early at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to get a spot in line ...

Tempest in the (crab soup tea)pot

I'm a bit astonished that several people are disappointed that the Admiral Heights Improvement Association is hosting a crab soup cook-off on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
For the record, a group of good-hearted people saw a need for the cookoff after the Maryland Seafood Festival held annually at Sandy Point State Park was cancelled. It happened because the economy ain't so good, so to speak.
The Annapolis and Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce is unhappy that the association didn't tell the chamber what was underway. It's not too late to lend a hand, folks, if you really ...

    Scenic Rivers Land Trust grows!

    Dear Readers:
Thought you might like to know the latest about a conservation project in the area. There's information near the bottom of the article with facts on the South River Greenway project. The photo is of a woodduck birdhouse.

National Foundation Helps Generations Protect Land in South River Greenway

When Jennifer Troy’s father, Colby Rucker, helped form a land protection group 20 years ago with his friend Jan Hollmann, he may not have realized that his passion for land stewardship would continue on in his daughter and grandchildren.

Today, that organization has grown into the Scenic Rivers Land Trust...

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sharing an email from the Annapolis Police Department which is seeking your help - can you share the good stories with your friends? I'm going to provide the police with an outlet here to inform you of good stuff - you can decide its value. Here's the latest from Hal Dalton at the Annapolis Police Department.

    100th Habitat house!

Think you could build 100 houses? Arundel Habitat for Humanity did, putting one foot in front of another until the nonprofit has climbed what might seem like an impossible mountain. On Aug. 9 the organization celebrates this accomplishment. Following here is a heart-warming story of a woman who will be enjoying a new abode with the help of volunteers.

On August 9th Lorraine Williams will receive a Bible, her certificate of ownership, and the keys to her new house at 204 Clay Street in Annapolis. It has been a long journey for Lorraine, but she says, “I’m going back ...
