4/19/2008:
If you're a basketball fan, ice hockey fan, or both, Saturday was a great day to kick back and watch the two sports on your HD big screen. The Wizards kicked off a fab day of sports at 12:30 p.m., while the Capitals started a touch later at 1 p.m.
In between my own bouts between a foot-high lawn versus the lawnmower, I was able to catch most all of both games (Wizards vs. Cavs and Caps vs. Flyers). Two playoff contests that had intense rivalry and some Sports Center-worthy highlights (did anyone see Lebron dunk that wicked alley-oop or Alexander Semin shoot that turn-around wrister to the upper left goal?). If you follow either team, you know where I'm coming from on this post. The 'Zards hung in there at a tough Quicken Loans Arena vs. the Cavs, only to barely lose at the end. It was sad to see them unable to hang on to an 11-point lead and play a woeful 4th quarter, but they gave Cleveland a baller-game and almost sent the home crowd home in tears. They'll toughen for Game 2 tonight and I think they'll pull off the W to the tune of 99-94 or thereabouts.
Meanwhile, the Caps provided late afternoon smiles. While the 'Zards were handing Cleveland a game in which they should have won, the Caps were busy brutalizing the Flyers in almost every aspect of the game. The Caps clearly were hitting the Flyers harder and created more opportunities in front of Flyer goaltender Martin Biron than in previous contests. They led the game from start to end. It was a solid win. Tonight, the puck drops at 7 p.m. (same start time as the Wizards by the way) in Game 6 at Philly. Notice the trend over the past two games vs. the Flyers; the Caps have played more "muscle man" than finesse hockey and it's resulted in an overtime heartbreaker and a win. Not bad. If they keep it up, look for them to bring the series home tomorrow night (yes, Game 7 would be Tuesday night).
So I guess you could that Monday night will also be a great night to kick back and watch the two sports on your HD big screen. Let's go Caps! Let's go Wiz!
p.s. Watched a little of the PGA Champions Tour Pro-Am late Saturday afternoon. It was great to golfers such as Tom Watson, Curtis Strange, and Craig Stadler paired up with the likes of Rhonde Barber, Jerry Rice, and Dale Jarrett, among many others. Used to watch these pros some 15-20 years ago. Was nice to see familiar faces on the course.
