Don't Take the Money & Run
Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Note to Gilbert Arenas: Please don't take the money and run. Instead, take the money and stay. News of the Washington Wizards' All-Star guard has been swirling around his decision to pursue free agency and all that it has to offer in the off-season: plane trips, wining and dining, limos, entertainment, contract offers--all efforts to woo free agent sports stars from one city to another.
Late last night, news broke that the Wizards offered Arenas a maximum contract--a.k.a. BIG MONEY--to stay in Washington; to the tune of $127M over 6 years. Earlier in the day, the Golden State Warriors reportedly offered Arenas a contract in the ballpark of just under $100M over 5 years. By offering Arenas the maximum contract allowable under NBA regulations, the Wizards have clearly said, "We want you back and we are willing to do whatever it takes."
Everyone is awaiting Arenas' decision and for now he has to consider that Washington wasted zero time offering Agent Zero exactly what he sought (free agency officially opened yesterday at 12:01 a.m.). A couple other looming questions over his head might be:
Do the fans appreciate and adore me? Answer: You better believe it. We LOVE you tossing your sweaty jerseys after the game into our faces. Sweat never tasted so good.
Do I enjoy all that D.C. has to offer in terms of NBA lifestyle? Answer: His lavish and birthday parties seem to point to yes.
Do I like the weather here? Answer: Winters don't seem to exist anymore, so what's not to like.
So Wizards fans, I pose the question to you: Do you think Gilbert Arenas is worth a max NBA contract? How bad do you want him here in Washington?
p.s. He better make sure his knee is ready to play along with those dollar signs.
