Top plein air painters from across America descend on Easton once again for this year’s Plein Air-Easton! Competition and Arts Festival, the premier event of its kind on the East Coast. En plein air is a French phrase that literally means “in the open air.” Over 50 artists, including a handful who call the Eastern Shore home, exhibit, sell, and judge pieces that could only be created en plein air during this weeklong festival at venues throughout downtown Easton.

This exhibit includes the artist’s range of subjects: landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, portraits, still lifes, murals, and bravura narrative paintings. Middleman’s work has been displayed across the country, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Artists from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia compete in this juried exhibit. Entries include original representations in oil, acrylic, watercolor, or pastel of landscapes on the Delmarva Peninsula. The St. Michaels Art League and the Working Artists Forum jointly present this show and sale.

Each spring, three local artists earn their way into Plein Air-Easton! through the TCVAC’s “Choose Three” competition. Displaying Talbot County’s local plein air scene, the gallery selects works for this exhibit in an annual competition.

The eight gallery artists entered into this year’s festival exhibit their work. They are: Robert J. Barber, Tim Bell, Ed Cooper, Bethanne Kinsella Cople, Tracey Frugoli, Robert Lewis, Larry Moore and Nancy Tankersley. Barber was the Grand Prize winner at Plein Air-Easton! 2007, and was the second-place winner as well as winner of the Best Architectural Painting in 2006. Tim Bell, winner of the Grand Prize as well as Best Marine Painting in 2006, also won the Ultrecht Award for Best Use of Light and the People’s Choice Award in 2007. Tankersley co-owns the gallery.

A competition painter in Plein Air-Easton! 2008, gallery owner David Grafton’s landscape paintings remain on display in his gallery/studio on Dover Street. Fellow local artist Jeremy Joseph, an elementary school teacher in Easton, exhibits his work in the gallery as well.
