Operation Welcome Home (MD) meets and greets our servicemen and women who have returned from a deployment overseas. Volunteers are needed to provide a warm hand shake, cheers, and applause when Marines, Airmen, Soldiers and Sailors arrive through the International gates at BWI airport. Organizations, community groups, scouts, and individuals of all ages are welcome to this family event. BWI airport is the largest airport in the nation to meet and greet our hero's home, and to date, over 70,000 have been greeted. Come join the effort of supporting our Military! Meals on Wheels in Anne Arundel County packs and delivers nutritious meals weekdays (holidays included) to homebound residents who are unable to shop or cook. Meals on Wheels always needs volunteers to deliver food and visit. For more information, call 1 (866) 558-0827 or (410) 431-5257.
Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac rescues, fosters, and adopts out Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retriever-Lab mixes. Volunteers are needed to assist with Adopt-a-Lab Day on weekends, to transport dogs, evaluate dogs, conduct home visits, and provide foster homes for Labs. Volunteers also assist in recruiting veterinarians, writing grants, and helping with computers, accounting, public relations, and more. Chrysalis House in Crownsville provides addiction treatment services for women and women with children in a residential setting. Volunteers are needed to teach basic word processing, spread sheets, and basic resume writing; help with computer maintenance; building repairs and grounds maintenance; work in the childcare center; and facilitate recreational activities for residents. BWI Airport MD Ambassador Program /MD Office of Tourism Development's Volunteer Maryland Ambassadors, mature teens and older, offer guidance regarding airport services, Maryland tourism and information, public transportation options, directions to regional destinations, and hotel reservations throughout the year. Each trained volunteer works at least one four-hour shift every week at the Welcome Center desk, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., any weekday. Activities are planned throughout the year. Legacy Leadership Program offers training and internships to Maryland residents age 50 and up to serve as volunteer “legacy leaders” during the 2009 General Assembly Session (January through the first week of April). Selectees received free training two days per week in College Park and for 10 weeks in Annapolis starting in September on the bill process, government operations, state history, and constituent matters. The assignments are at least two days per week starting in January 2009 in the Annapolis office of a state senator or delegate. The unpaid positions grant unequaled access to General Assembly operations and provide individuals with an educational understanding of government processes. The Lutheran Mission Society Christian health and welfare agency brings health and wellness to individuals, families and communities who are dealing with conflict and disease with the help of volunteer caregivers. Programs provide walk-in clients with food, clothing, health, counseling, and educational services. Residential care is provided for women and children along with instruction in parenting, homemaking, nutrition, and more. Volunteers, age 15 and up, help with sorting, storing, and packing donated food and other goods at the Annapolis location, 230 West St. Volunteers teach parenting, literacy, health/wellness, use of computer technology, and more. Mid-Shore AARP Tax Aide is seeking volunteers to help provide free tax assistance and prepare 2009 tax returns for low- and middle-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older, at eleven locations in Talbot, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, and Kent counties from February 1 through April 15, 2010. A series of training classes will be held on December 15 and January 11, 12, 14, 18, 19 and 21.
