Annapolis

Clowning Around

Cole Bros. Circus, a springtime family favorite, returns to the Annapolis area May 7–8 at Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville. The big top unfurls and within it horseback riding jugglers, an aerial ballet, trapeze artists, elephants, thunderdome motorcyclists, the human cannonball, clowns, and much, much more will dazzle you. 1 (888) 332-5200 or www.colebroscircus.com.

Wah Wah Wah Wipeout

Six Flags America in Largo unveils its newest (and hippest) ride to date this summer season: Tony Hawk’s Halfpipe! The first of its kind in the nation, this wet ‘n’ wild ride is sure to have the whole family dowsed in fun. (301) 249-1500 or www.sixflags.com.

Bombs Away

It’s all-out bombs, blitzes, hits, and a few kicks when the newest addition to the American Football Indoor Association takes to the field. The Baltimore Mariners will play two home games—5/10 vs. Carolina and 5/30 vs. Florida—at 1st Mariner Arena in this inaugural season, which continues through June. (410) 347-2006 or www.baltimoremariners.com.

Streaking Squadron

On May 21 at 2 p.m., the Blue Angels will thunder over and around Annapolis. The beloved Boeing F/A 18 Hornet flight demonstration squadron will perform aerial maneuvers at speeds upwards of Mach 1.7 (1,200 m.p.h.) over the Severn River. Flight rehearsal takes place May 20. (410) 293-1000 or www.usna.edu.

When Spring is Bright, Gardens Delight

An annual favorite, the Hammond Harwood House’s Secret Garden Tour takes on an Annapolis Charter 300 theme this May 31–June 1 by featuring gardens of homes circa 1800 and earlier. The tour will visit homes in the Historic District, including the gardens of Maryland’s four signers of the Declaration of Independence. (410) 263-4683 or hammondharwoodhouse.org.

Scene & Herd

The Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival at Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship is the happening scene for all things wooly May 3–4. From shepherding and shearing contests to fine arts, workshops, food, music, and more, the event promises to be “the premier sheep and fiber festival in the known world!” (410) 531-3647 or www.sheepandwool.org.

Down the Stretch They Come!

It’s party time, it’s exciting, it’s the prestigious 133rd Running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on May 17. Will this year’s Kentucky Derby winner follow the path to Triple Crown glory? Only the Preakness Stakes can determine such destiny. (Pictured is last year’s winner Curlin.)
