What's the Buzz?

Annapolis Restaurant Buzz | June 2008

Lots of buzz-worthy news this month, so let’s have at it. Of course any time a celebrity makes a local appearance, they make the headlines in the dailies. Which is why we were scratching our heads when we heard that American “celebutante” Nicole Richie and hubby Joel Madden were spotted dining at Jimmy Cantler’s Riverside Inn in Annapolis. We don’t remember seeing anything in the news about this auspicious sighting, so here’s the scoop; Madden is, of course, a founding band member of radio gods Good Charlotte, whom originally hail from Waldorf, Maryland. So it seems likely Richie tagged along Madden for a little family time back home (he currently resides in Glendale, Ca.) and the couple made a side trip to Annapolis. Indeed, Cantler’s confirmed the couple did enjoy a meal there in late April.

For the latte lover that enjoys sipping the steaming beverage while pondering fine art, Caffe Pronto (three locations in Annapolis) features latte art classes. But this is art with a twist—literally. The class teaches students how to “paint” designs into the froth of one’s latte. Greg Suekoff, 2007 Ultimate Barista Challenge Latte Art Champion and 2008 Espresso Cocktail Champion, will lead a demonstration and hands-on session instructing participants in the importance of Latte Art training. How cool (or hot) is that? Class is scheduled for June 14, 3–4:30 p.m.

And kudos to three fine restaurants—two in Eastport, the other in Riva—celebrating significant anniversaries. Carrol’s Creek Café , located just across the Spa Creek Bridge and along Severn Avenue in Eastport, Annapolis, recently turned 25 this past May. The restaurant has been in business since 1983 and to celebrate its silver anniversary, Carrol’s will feature popular “menu memories” from the last 25 years. And diners are encouraged to share their special memories and stories of their dining experiences at the restaurant for a chance to win a dinner for two. Ruth’s Chris Steak House , also in Eastport, is gearing up for their 10th Anniversary celebration. Big Steaks Management, the local franchisee of Ruth’s Chris, announced that the restaurant will celebrate with an interior “facelift” (new bar area, plasma screen televisions, bathrooms, furniture, and wallpaper), a prix fixe “Sizzling Celebration Menu” (available through June 30th), charitable contributions to the Annapolis Maritime Musuem and SPCA of Anne Arundel County, and promotional contests. Meanwhile, Mike’s Crab House , which overlooks the South River in Riva, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. In business since 1958, the restaurant has long been a favorite among locals and tourists as a destination for outdoor crab picking and summer drinks enjoyed at the Tiki Bar.

With summer on mind, Big Bats Cafe (Best of Eastern Shore winner for best wings) would like to remind everyone they are your baseball headquarters. At their two locations—Stevensville and Easton—the outdoor patios are open and have plenty of TVs to watch the ball games. Be sure you don't miss a minute of the action for your favorite team. Summer also has a ring of freshness to it; Domenicas Restaurant & Lounge confirmed that an updated summer seasonal menu will soon be introduced. Owner Domenica Tripodi says fresh Mediterranean flavors will dominate the menu at the Annapolis restaurant. At Les Folies , off Riva Road in Annapolis, chef Christian Jautrois has signed on as the new executive chef. The classically trained French chef brings a wealth of experience from many Michelin star-rated European restaurants including Arbutus in London and with famed chef, Gerard Pangaud. Jautrois is currently focusing on the creativity of the daily specials, as well as reinvigorating appetizers and fish and meat dishes.
