What's the Buzz?

Annapolis Restaurant Buzz | November 2008

With great fanfare, Stoney River Legendary Steak opened this past October at Westfield Annapolis Mall in greater Annapolis. The opening marks the first Mid-Atlantic location of this upscale steakhouse. Enter and you are transported to a lakeside cabin or mountain lodge depending on your mood—it’s campfire chic and casual fine dining. The menu reads like a who’s who of comfort dishes, but each features inspired preparation. Filet Mignon becomes “coffee-cured filet.” Trout is sautéed with a crabmeat and leek stuffing. Sage roasted chicken breast. Tempura lobster tails. Pecan-encrusted swordfish. Mmm, are you kidding? Sounds too good to be true. And yet it’s not. Enjoy.

Just a hop and skip down the mall walkway from Stoney River is Austin Grill, also at Westfield Annapolis Mall. The recently opened (this past August) Tex-Mex eatery is quickly catching on among Annapolitans as a go-to restaurant for fresh, made-from-scratch, authentic dishes that nod to the spicy and fun flavors of the southwest. Enchiladas, burritos, tacos, fajitas, and choice salads occupy a bulk of the real estate on the menu. Several fresh salsas are made fresh daily and there are several off-the-cuff entrees that are eye-openers, such as the chili-crusted tuna.

Those living at the 1901 West development located on West Street in Annapolis have reason to celebrate. For the past several months, dating back to May (when the city received an application for a liquor license) plans have been in the works for a new restaurant to be called Philly Flash, by owners Joseph A. DeCesaris, Donna M. DeCesaris, and Angela Dentz. Our website multimedia producer, Jeffrey A. Haines, who lives at 1901, reports that, “the site has been very active on evenings with truck deliveries, tables being set up. It looks like they’re almost ready to open.” Jenna DeCesaris, Joe's daughter, says, "We have a long history with Maryland drag racing--our family opened three racing tracks in the 1960s. It's no wonder we all learned about business, cooking, and racing. We're putting these lessons to work at Philly Flash, from our delicious cheesesteaks, pizza, and wings, to the vintage model car collection displayed in our dining area. Please come and enjoy our food, hospitality, and a little slice of racing memorabilia."
