Holiday Breath Busters | Five Festive Foods to Avoid this Christmas
By Bekah Oester

Christmas is days away, and no doubt you’ll be eating with friends and loved ones often in the upcoming days. Congrats on giving up the onions to save those near you from icky halitosis, but Dr. Harold Katz, a “Dentist to the Stars,” says that there are other holiday favorites that make the bad breath list.
According to him, the breath un-friendly combination of dairy and sugar (it creates bacteria that bring on the breath) is a huge factor in making your mouth not-so-kissable under the mistletoe. So, if you’re hoping for a kiss (or just to stay around everyone), Katz says to avoid these top five holiday breath busters:
5. Candy Canes
4. Cranberry Sauce
3. Candied Yams
2. Mashed potatoes (if they contain butter and/or sour cream)
1. Egg Nog
Katz says that, “Contrary to the myths about bad breath out there, bad breath does not come from your stomach – it comes from the back of your throat and tongue...So, if you want your mistletoe moments to last longer than the last cup of eggnog in the punch bowl, avoid the nog and pucker up.” And of course, keep up the brushing and flossing for a pleasant (and healthy!) mouth.
