On Thursday, May 8th, the Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region hosted its 10th Annual Golf Challenge at South River Golf Links in Edgewater. Before nearly 100 golfers set out for the day, the Arc presented What's Up? Publishing Group with an award for being the "2007 Media Sponsor of the Year." The award honors excellence, accuracy, and optimism in reporting on disabilities. Editor-in-Chief, Nadja Maril, and Events Coordinator, Nicole Grisanti, accepted the award on behalf of What's Up? Publisher, Veronica Tovey, from the President of the Board of Directors, Dave Rosenthal.

This April, Gibson Island Country School and their invited guests, including students from Baltimore City schools, were given the rare opportunity to listen to a lecture by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder, the Jane Goodall Institute, UN Messenger of Peace at the school’s Roots & Shoots Fair. Goodall was invited by 5th grade teacher Maura Farrall who heads the school’s “Roots & Shoots Club.” Roots & Shoots is a program of the Jane Goodall Institute and is about making positive change happen—for our communities, for animals, and for the environment. When planning the fair, Farrall wrote to Goodall and invited her to attend and to Farrall’s delight, she accepted.

After sharing a chimpanzee call with Goodall, students from Gibson Island Country School and several Baltimore City Schools eagerly listened to Goodall's speech.


Scholarships for Scholars held its annual awards ceremony recently this past April 28 at the Chesapeake Arts Center. Thirty-one graduating seniors were honored with scholarships totaling $123,000. A new logo was unveiled, adding to the excitement of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the program.


Sage Snider, of Severna Park High School, winner of the $7,000 Edward J. Anderson Scholarship, and former state delegate Elizabeth Anderson, wife of the late Dr. Anderson, former Anne Arundel County Public Schools superintendent.

Nearly 200 runners participated in the Anne Arundel Sierra Club’s 14th Annual Earth Day 5K Race and Walk at Quiet Waters Park, enjoying incredible weather and going home with plenty of prizes and treats. Among the runners and walkers were a wide array of strollers and family dogs, clearly spurred on by the perfect spring day. The 5K is the club’s big annual fundraiser. The Greater Severna Park Mom’s Club recently held “Splash into Summer”, a children's fashion show & silent auction, at Chartwell Country Club.[Sunday April 27, 12-3pm.] The event included a delicious sit-down lunch, and fashion show featuring children's summer fashions from several Annapolis and Sevena Park stores. The beneficiary for this event was a local Severna Park child, Zachary Johnson, who received life-saving liver and small bowel transplants. On Friday, May 2nd in the midst of the Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival the rededication of the newly renovated City Dock and Susan C. Campbell Park was celebrated. The Naval Academy’s Brass Quintet entertained and Mayor Ellen Moyer, leaders from the city and state, representatives of the Department of Natural Resources, and the engineers and contractors who worked on the site spoke at the ceremony that ended with the ringing of bells by visiting town criers and the smashing of champagne against a piling.


With a shout of “Oyez!,”Squire Frederick and a winner from Watermark’s Junior Town Crier Competition read proclamations and rang their bells to signify the official opening of City Dock.

The local Captain Ward Veazey Society of the Children of the American Revolution recently was recognized at a state CAR conference at the Sheraton Annapolis Hotel. The chapter (Anne Arundel/Prince George’s counties) meets monthly usually in conjunction with a visit to a historical site, such as the National Museum of the American Indian, American Indian Museum, or a service day at Fort McHenry or elsewhere. Recently the chapter participated in activities at the Maryland General Assembly.

The Friends of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra held their annual Champagne Sunday on April 27 at the home of Bud and Bee Billups. The event was chaired by Kathy Carpenter and Janice Rudmann and supports FASO's Scholarships for Scholars music scholar and provides additional funding for ASO's summer concert series. The 100 attendees enjoyed music by an Annapolis High School ensemble.

Three area residents who are not Rotarians but are active in the community were recognized with Service Above Self Awards by the Annapolis, Parole and South Anne Arundel County Rotary clubs at the annual dinner held recently at Loews Annapolis Hotel. They were Linda Dennis (South Anne Arundel County club) honored for her volunteerism; Richard Franyo (Annapolis Club) for his charitable work; and Anne Pearson (Parole club) for her environmental efforts. Rotary Exchange team members from The Netherlands also gave a presentation.

Gunston Day School Spring Auction | Queen Anne’s


Over two hundred parents, past parents, trustees, grandparents, alumni and friends from all over Maryland gathered to support Gunston Day School during their recent Annual Spring Auction, raising over $150,000 to support school programs.

The Adademy of Art Museum's Annual Spring Gala | Easton


400 patrons attended this sold out event. The annual Spring Gala celebrated A Breath of Plein Air with renowned art historian William H. Gerdts. The sold-out event netted over $85,000, which will be dedicated to expand outreach initiatives that benefit children and adults such as ArtREACH, ART TO GO...and Concerts in the Community.

Dorchester Arts Center Gala | Cambridge


The Dorchester Arts Center celebrated its inaugural Guest Artist Event on Saturday with approximately 150 guests in attendance. The evening included a wine tasting, dinner, music, dancing, art and an auction helped to raise funds for the non profit organization.


Russell S. Baker, President of the Nathan Foundation surprised the Arts Center by presenting the organization with a $30,000 donation from the Foundation at the beginning of the Guest Artist Event. Advanced Ecology Award | Centreville


The Tawes Award for Clean Environment co-sponsored by the MD Dept of the Environment and the MD Petroleum Council was recently awarded to the Advanced Ecology students at Kennard Elementary School for their commitment to environmental preservation. Under the leadership of Lee Franklin, their activities include: recycling, collecting e-waste, storm drain stenciling, raptor research and more.

St. Michaels Food and Wine Festival | St. Michaels


The sixth annual St. Michaels Food and Wine Festival, which concluded April 27, raised a record $35,000 for contributions to six regional charities. The festival drew over 2,000 visitors to the region from seven states and the District of Columbia.
