Final page proof of Ginger Doyel’s new book, “Over the Bridge: A History of Eastport at Annapolis,” was presented June 26 to the Annapolis Maritime Museum, which published the book in September for $50, with proceeds to benefit the museum. The reception honoring the event was held at the Captain Herb Sadler Watermen’s Park next to the Annapolis Maritime Museum in Eastport. This is the museum’s first book, which is about 400 pages long and has 713 photos.

More than eight thousand people attended the International Great Grapes! Wine, Arts, and Food Festival July 26 and 27 at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville. Presented by Mills Fine Wine and Spirits, the event benefited the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County. More than 80 wines were available for tasting at the weekend event that also featured live entertainment and a raffle to win a trip to Sonoma Wine Country.

The first ever Long Table Party in Rugby Hall in Arnold was a great success with 100 folks in attendance and the tables in a line reaching half-a-football field – 160 yards! Table decorations were flowers from residents’ gardens and baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables. Hosted by four couples, the event featured Rock Bottom Blue Grass Band and catering by Saucy Salamander.

Over 5,000 votes were cast by the What’s Up? readers, naming their favorite restaurants, retailers, and services for the 2008 Best of Annapolis and Best of Eastern Shore contest! The celebration acknowledging honorees was held June 12 in the grand ballroom of the Loews Annapolis Hotel, where over 30 winning restaurants sampled spectacular cuisine and drinks to a sell-out crowd of 700 guests. The event raised over $15,000 in proceeds for three local charities, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, and Modest Needs.

On June 21, supporters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation enjoyed Bands in the Sand 2008 at the waterfront beach of the foundation’s headquarters, the Philip Merrill Environmental Center, in Annapolis. All had a great time as bands performed during a gorgeous day and evening and funds were raised to support the CBF’s programs.

An Enchanted Summer Evening was held on June 21 at O’Callaghan Annapolis Hotel in Annapolis to benefit Annapolis’ only non-profit equity theatre, Bay Theatre Company. The most successful benefit gala ever for Bay Theatre, the event featured hors d’oeuvres, seated dinner, dancing, plus theatrical entertainment, silent auction and more.

Anne Arundel Women Giving Together, a women’s giving circle, met on June 11 at Historic London Town and Gardens for a showcase featuring the presentation of its grants for 2008 to six local organizations. AAWGT is composed of more than 130 women who pool their resources and designate grants to meet certain objectives. This year $57,175 went to nonprofit groups focused on women and children.

About 300 people attended the 23rd annual Tribute to Women and Industry awards dinner held recently by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County at the BWI Marriott Hotel honoring 26 women and their sponsoring companies. Three of these women were names community honorees and were sponsored by other companies: Elizabeth Barrett, founder of the All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis; JoAnn Price, chairman of Rob’s Barbershop Community Foundation; and Veronica Tovey, publisher, What’s Up? Publishing Group. Carolyn Sullivan, who has coordinated TWIN programs for 23 years, received special recognition. Anne Arundel Community College headed by Dr. Martha Smith was corporate partner with the YWCA and Rhonda Ulmer was guest speaker. Foremothers of the YWCA, the late Esther Carpenter and the late Derby Hirst, were recognized for their contributions to the YWCA and the community.

AAMC Grand Opening | Kent Island
Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) held its grand opening ceremony in June. The event was well-attended by thousands of local residents and featured tours of the new facility, food, a moonbounce and other children’s activities, and fire trucks on display next door at the new Kent Island Fire Company building.

Hospital Auxiliary Officers | Easton
Members of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary elected officers for a two-year term at a June lunch meeting. Through a corps of 275 active volunters, the Auiliary provides patient care services at Memorial Hospital, Shore Regional Cancer Center in Easton and the Diagnostic and IMaging Centers in Easton and Denton.

AAMC Island Facility
About 30 members of the board of Bosom Buddies Charities Inc. and Anne Arundel Medical Center’s staff and physicians attended a recent reception of the hospital’s new facility on Kent Island, The event honored Susan Ponchock, founder of the Bosom Buddies which has raised nearly $500,000 at its annual Bosom Buddies Ball since its founding three years ago. The funds purchased the digital mammography equipment for the new hospital center.

Chesapeake Wine Festival | Stevensville
More than a thousand people attended the inaugural presentation of the Chesapeake Bay Wine Festival at Terrapin Nature Area in Stevensville on May 31 and June 1, where they enjoyed tastings of wines from 15 Maryland vineyards. Participants met with three dozen exhibitors and enjoyed live entertainment, demonstrations on food and wine pairing, and food from various vendors. Presenting sponsors included What’s Up? Publishing Group. Proceeds benefited Special Olympics Upper Shore, Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, American Cancer Society and the Foundation for Community Partnerships.
