The first annual Ladies Tennis Round Robin was held on October 4 at the new Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis. Forty-eight women enjoyed a fabulous day, which included a continental breakfast, two hours of tennis, a champagne lunch, live entertainment, and an exciting raffle and silent auction. Dr. Kelly Sullivan, founder and President of Wellness House, was the guest speaker. We are pleased to report that approximately $24,000 was raised to benefit Wellness House. It truly was the Tennis Event of the Year! Event co-chairs were Betsi Delaney and Bernie Schultz. The talented and dedicated all-volunteer committee worked tirelessly to make the event a success.

About 350 guests attended the 2008 Celebration of Philanthropy Luncheon held November 14 at the DoubleTree Hotel to honor a student, a volunteer couple, and the Philanthropist of the Year. The eighth annual event was co-sponsored by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Maryland Chapter. Proceeds go to a scholarship fund to be used for training and support for those seeking education in the field of development and fund raising. For the first time a morning program was held on trends in philanthropy and how to succeed in turbulent times.

A new home for a family currently living in public housing will be built in 2009 through the volunteer efforts of women participating in the Arundel Habitat for Humanity Women Build project. Recently community women gathered for a wine reception and the opportunity to learn from first time Habitat homeowners how their lives have changed through the opportunity to own their own home. Eventually 14 houses are planned for Clay Street in the Annapolis Historic District.
The Strut and Sip charity cocktail party and fashion show to benefit Maryland Therapeutic Riding Center–Horses That Heal was recently held this past November 6 at Osteria 177 restaurant in Annapolis. The event featured the season’s trends in women’s fashion and jewelry, DJ music and dancing, hors d’ouevres, and specialty tea-infused cocktails. Miss Maryland USA Casandra Tressler was on hand to model fashions, and an exciting live auction included a Vmoto scooter, as well as other items.
