Bay Winds Concert & Shady Side Museum Fourth of July Celebration

Date:
Saturday, July 04, 2009
Description:
BAY WINDS BAND CONCERT FEATURED AT SHADY SIDE MUSEUM FOURTH OF JULY What better way to celebrate July Fourth than by enjoying a patriotic, stirring band concert, with the beauty of the West River in the background, with no admission cost? You can by coming to the Captain Salem Avery Museum, 1418 E.W. Shady Side Road, and hearing the 40-piece famous Bay Winds Concert Band, sponsored by the Shady Side Rural Heritage Society and Greenstreet Gardens. A special invitation is being extended to servicemen, active and retired, and their families to attend this event. They will be given special recognition and free refreshments. The Fourth of July begins in Shady Side with the traditional parade sponsored by the local Kiwanis organization. Shady Side Road will be closed at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection with Cedarhurst Road. The parade starts from the Post Office at 10 a.m. and continues to the Kiwanis Hall on Snug Harbor Road. There are multiple categories for trophies and ribbons, and judging will take place at the reviewing stand in front of the Hall. These activities will be concluded in time for everyone to continue on to the Capt. Salem Avery Museum to bring their baking contest entries, buy some lunch, and find a comfortable spot from which to enjoy the 1 p.m. Bay Winds Band concert. The old fashioned baking contest will take place again. Contestants are invited to bring their entrees to the Museum by noon. Judges are the members of our Delegations to the State Legislature, Speaker Michael Busch, Delegates Virginia Clagett and Ron George. Ribbons will be awarded to the winners in categories ranging from cakes, pies, cookies, bars, and those decorated for the holiday. Following the judging, portions of the baked items will be offered for sale. The concert will begin at 1 p.m., offering people in the community a rare opportunity to hear this very talented group. The program is presented as a gift to the community. The Society invites everyone to bring a lawn chair or blanket, listen to the inspiring music, enjoy the beauty of the waterfront site, and celebrate the birth of our country with friends and family. The program will begin with Boy Scouts raising the flag and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The Bay Winds Band, under the direction of Michael Svec, will then present their popular music. LeAnna Brown will sing the Star Spangled Banner after a stellar appearance last year. There will be activities for children, and a food stand operated by Society volunteers will be available serving hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks and soft drinks.
