For more than 55 years, Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers (formerly Easton Day Care Center) has been guided by a singular mission: Building Brighter Futures for Mid-Shore families through educational, financially accessible childcare.
The organization started in 1970 with one classroom operating out of a local church. Today, Critchlow Adkins operates five sites across Talbot County, serving hundreds of families each year in its all-day preschool, before-and after-school care, and summer camps for children ages 2 through 12.
Critchlow Adkins classrooms are always abuzz with activity. In one room, you may encounter preschoolers singing and dancing with a local musician or writing their own storybooks. In the next, children are taking care of their bodies and minds during a relaxing yoga session. After school, students may be reading a book for inspiration before diving into an engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) challenge that encourages teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
Even playtime is for learning at Critchlow Adkins. Each classroom has stations where children can explore math, art, reading, music, and more. Playgrounds are filled with activities that hone fine motor skills, inspire outdoor exploration, and allow imaginations to run wild.
All five centers are accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and have earned their EXCELS (Excellence Counts in Early Learning and School Age Care) Check Level 5 rating - an award reserved for the highest quality childcare providers in the state. The organization was awarded Best Preschool and Best Child Care in the APG Best of the Best Chesapeake contest, and was recently named Nonprofit of the Year at the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce Best in Business Awards. Even so, Critchlow Adkins and its staff continue to strive for improvement every day.
“We are always seeking new ways to give our children the best possible head start and set them up for success,” says Executive Director Cristy Morrell. “We invest in professional development for our teachers and in cultivating valuable partnerships, like our recent Preschool Expansion partnership with MSDE.”
