Symphonic Titans Presented by The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, March 5th, 8 p.m.
brComposers Mahler and Shostakovich are among the most important figures in the development of the symphony as a form, and the carriers of the traditions from late romanticism to modernism. Mahler had a clear influence in the compositional style of Shostakovich, so having both composers in the same program is a logical association that makes sense artistically. Lynn Harrell (pictured) is a titan among cello soloists.
Rotary Club of Annapolis’ 13th Annual Black Tie and Diamonds Gala
Saturday, March 5th, 6 p.m.
brIt’s time to sparkle and shine at the Rotary Club of Annapolis’ 13th Annual Black Tie and Diamonds Gala on Saturday, March 5th at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy cocktails, dinner, music, and dancing while raising funds for Seeds 4 Success. The mission of Seeds 4 Success is to guide children living in Annapolis public and subsidized housing so they become healthy successful adults. The event, which will be held at The Westin Annapolis, has raised funds over the last 12 years for local nonprofits and charities.
Chamber Orchestra Kremlin Performs Beethoven
Thursday, March 3rd, 7:30 p.m.
brThe Washington College Concert Series presents the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, an 18-piece ensemble from Moscow, Russia featuring an all-Beethoven program. Founded in 1991, the orchestra comprised of some of Russia’s finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director, Misha Rachlevsky.
Puccini’s Manon Lescaut
Saturday, March 5th, 1 p.m.
brThe Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story. Opolais sings the title role of the country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Kaufmann is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. “Desperate passion” is the phrase Puccini himself used to describe the opera that confirmed his position as the preeminent Italian opera composer of his day. The Met: Live in HD Series brought world class opera to The Eastern Shore in 2010 and we are proud to announce the 2015-16 Metropolitan Opera Season. The Avalon Theatre is one of the few venues in Maryland to host these live transmissions.
