Navy's reign of dominance over Army has come to an end. Well, at least for another year. After 14 straight years of Midshipmen victories, the Black Knights shifted the balance of power in the nation's most storied rivalry with a 21-17 victory Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
No. 25 Navy (9-4) sputtered offensively for the second straight week, mustering a season-low 201 yards. The Midshipmen trailed 14-0 before managing a 17-0 run to take the lead late into the fourth quarter. However, Army (7-5) regained the lead with six minutes to go and never relinquished it. The Black Knights gave the Mids a taste of their own medicine throughout the day, rushing for 316 yards and maintaining possession for 40:32.
Navy quarterback Zach Abey was rusty in his first career start. The sophomore out of Archbishop Spalding is believed to be the first Navy quarterback to make his first career start against Army. Abey ran for two touchdowns but threw two interceptions and was sacked twice.
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Army cadets stormed the field to cele ate the team's first victory over Navy since 2001.
Navy closes its season against Louisiana Tech (8-5) in the Armed Forces Bowl on December 23.
