Art historian John T. Spike, one of the world’s leading experts on the Italian Renaissance, is coming to Easton to give a lecture on Michelangelo at the Academy Art Museum on December 2, 2011 at 6 p.m. Author of the critically acclaimed biography “Young Michelangelo: The Path to the Sistine,” Spike will focus on the artist’s early life and career, the period during which he sculpted David, the iconic statue of the Renaissance in Florence. According to Spike, the book is “a portrait of Michelangelo as a young man burning to attract attention.” The London Telegraph’s review of the books raves that “no art historian has got closer to [Michelangelo] than John T. Spike.”
Currently Distinguished Scholar in Residence at The College of William & Mary, Spike has lectured on Michelangelo all over the world, including at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and has received many prestigious awards. The lecture coincides with Easton’s First Weekend art events on December 2, 2011. The cost is $25 for Academy members and $30 for non-members.
