Here is the first poem of a planned monthly series of contributions from local and renown poets. We hope you will find each month’s poem amusing, inspiring, or thought provoking. We begin with a poem encouraging young people to write.
Annapolis’s own Poet Laureate, Jefferson Holland is singer-songwriter, storyteller, and poet. As Annapolis Poet Laureate he encourages the addition of poetry in our lives and has a lot of fun doing so. Enjoy! —Janice F. Booth
For the Young Poets of Annapolis
So you’re off on a venture of versification, Launched a career of playing with words, Some bug has infected your imagination, Now you can’t help it, it’s just that absurd! First, your brain flashes with hot inspiration, A mess you address via meter and rhyme, Wrestling words into some formulation Of what best expresses what you had in mind. That’s the fun part of this whole operation, You might even make up a new word or two, Maybe a word like “poetification,” Who would object? It’s all up to you. What do you have when you’re finally done with it? No matter! So long as you’ve
had some good fun with it!
