The Banneker-Douglass Museum will host an exhibition opening for Race-Rhythm-Reflection: The Art of James Terrell on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 4:00p.m.-6:00p.m. at 84 Franklin Street, Annapolis, Maryland 21401. The exhibition consists of over thirty paintings by Terrell. The artist uses concentric shapes, bold, layered lines and arresting colors to give voice to the ambiguities of life while searching for spiritual peace.
r
James Stephen Terrell is a Washington, DC-based singer-songwriter, painter, educator, musician, and pastor, who believes that his “art is a reflection of joy, pain and confusion, contemplation and deliverance.” He seeks to inspire his audience to search their souls and thus create their own personal harmony through an awakening of the subconscious. This search is further conveyed by the artist's deliberations on identity, spiritual exploration, and the creation of art itself.
r
Mr. Terrell graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC with a bachelor of fine arts in painting, from Parsons School of Design in New York City with a master of fine arts in painting, and from Columbia University-Union Theological Seminary in New York City with a master of divinity focusing on theology and the arts (painting and music). Currently, he teaches for the District of Columbia School System, where he encourages his students to become entrepreneurs as well as creators.
r
At the reception, James Terrell will discuss the exhibition as will Dr. Joni Jones, BDM museum director. Come join us and become inspired!
r
The event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served. Registration is encouraged by October 22, 2012.
