Having played soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and basketball as a youth athlete, Ga iela was able to whittle down her favorite sports to field hockey and lacrosse.
“I was drawn to these sports because they require learning new skills and challenging myself to be the best I can be,” she says. “Field hockey in particular is a sport that requires the effort of every player in each play. I love being able to push the ball, dribble around players, and steal the ball on defense. When I play lacrosse, I love to dodge around players, block players from having the chance to shoot, and having the ability to run at a fast pace.”
During her time at Key School, she earned a spot on the IAAM All-Conference “C” field hockey team during her sophomore and junior years as well as the IAAM All-Conference “C” lacrosse team her junior year. She represented Anne Arundel County during The Betty Hallmark Field Hockey Game, attended the IAAM Athletic Leadership Conference in October 2013, and was named to the 2014 US Lacrosse Girls’ All-Academic Team.
She looks up to former Maryland Terrapins lacrosse player and current Mount St. Mary’s assistant coach Katie Schwarzmann, who won the Tewaaraton Award for being the best female lacrosse player in the country during her final two seasons at College Park.
“I look up to her because she hustled every game, looked to other teammates, was a team player and was confident with what she does,” Beavers says.
Having grown up a huge Terps fan, Beavers is contemplating attending the University of Maryland but plans to visit more schools in the fall. Her other options include South Carolina, Wake Forest, Clemson, Richmond, and Florida Institute of Technology.
Following college, Beavers hopes to one day run her own business but before she graduates Key, she is eagerly anticipating two successful seasons during her final year, primarily focusing on taking younger teammates under her wing.
“I am excited to mentor younger players and leave a legacy for the rising juniors and sophomores,” she says. “One of my goals is to reach out and help younger players including my sister, Michaela, who will be a sophomore on the field hockey team.”
