Ian Monroe
South River // Soccer
A 2013 honorable mention All-County selection, Monroe gained his appreciation for soccer at the age of three.
He draws his inspiration to become a better soccer player from his father David, who played soccer in high school and college, and current Naval Academy assistant soccer coach Nate Baker.
Monroe credits his father for his work ethic and how he treats people. Baker trained with Monroe prior to his freshman year at South River and gave him a piece of advice that has always stood out.
“He always said to me ‘Walk onto the field knowing you’re one of the better players on the bench and whenever you walk off the field know that you played better than the guy across from you.’”
Monroe is enrolled in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program at South River, which has helped prepare him for life after high school.
That program allowed him to participate in a 135-hour summer internship this past summer. That job experience reinforces his decision to major in either business or economics when he heads to college.
Monroe hopes to play soccer at college and has already looked at UMBC, Loyola (Md.) and Tufts University.
