An accomplished three-sport athlete for the Eagles, Ferares draws a lot of inspiration from the memory of his late grandmother.
“My grandma motivated me a lot while she was still alive,” he says. “She was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and told that she had about six months to live. She never gave up, knowing that she was going to die. She kept living her life as normal as she could and managed to live for two years after being diagnosed.”
Longevity is a theme for those that motivate him. His favorite athlete is New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, who will be retiring after this season following a prestigious 20-year career.
“His work ethic, motivation, and leadership inspire me to do that on my own teams in high school,” Ferares says.
Speaking of long distance, it’s no surprise that a cross country athlete’s favorite hobby is traveling.
“My dad was in the Marine Corps for twenty-four years and we moved all over the country,” he says. “We even lived in Japan for three years. It is so exciting to go see new places and learn about other cultures. I am thankful for the opportunities that I have been given so early in my life that many other kids my age have not.”
In golf, Ferares made the 2014 All-County Private School team, earned 2012 All-MIAA “C” Conference honors, and won awards for Player’s Choice and Most Outstanding Player. He also earned Most Improved Player for his hockey team.
He has looked at several colleges and wants to participate in a study-a oad program so he can continue to travel while also earning his degree.
He hopes to major in business management because it gives him many employment options following graduation.
In his spare time, Ferares spends time volunteering at his church’s youth program.
“It is a lot of fun because I get to see people that have similar interests as me,” he says, “and I get to meet new people every day.”
