If you carry a reusable straw with you everywhere, enjoy farmers markets, own a few succulents (or none of the above) and are looking for ways to celebrate our planet, you have come to the right place. With Earth Day right around the corner, we found the best eco-friendly events in Annapolis and beyond so you don’t have to. And, if you are feeling extra green, you and your friends can take public transportation to your desired event. Here’s how you can celebrate Earth Day this weekend and beyond:
For the active person
If you prefer a more scenic stroll, Tuckahoe State Park in Queen Anne will be hosting an Earth Day Hike on Friday, April 19th, 4–5 p.m. where visitors can walk the lake trail and pick up trash in the process. Looking to get outside and let off some steam? Quiet Waters Park will be hosting the 4th Annual Earth Day 5K on Saturday, April 27th at 9 a.m. All funds raised will benefit the Friends of Quiet Waters Nature Center Campaign.
For the change maker
Check out the largest cleanup event in the Chesapeake Bay region, Project Clean Stream, and help pick up trash from local Dorchester streams, creeks, rivers and ponds. On Saturday, April 20th, 9 a.m. join the Cambridge Sail & Power Squadron for a Choptank Riverbank cleanup, and help pick up trash along Choptank from the Route 50 bridge to Sailwinds.
Come get your hands dirty with Annapolis Greenscape on Saturday, April 27th and help with planting efforts in public spaces across Annapolis. You can get involved with Greenscape by attending one of the organizational meetings, selecting a neighborhood or community project and turning in necessary materials.
For the kids (or kids at heart)
This weekend at the Crofton Community Library enjoy Earth Day book reading and shredding events on Saturday, April 20th. With games, arts and crafts, water explorations, and an interactive murder mystery, this one is sure to be a hit with the kids! And while you're at it, be sure to grab your personal papers for free shredding. There is a four banker box per family maximum.
Alpacas, jaguars, and bears, oh my! You can see all of these animals and more at the
Salisbury Zoo’s Annual Earth Day Celebration from on Saturday, April 27th,10 a.m.–4 p.m. The event is free to the public and will host over 20 environmental organizations. Activities will include zookeeper talks, recycled craft activities, face painting, and animal meet and greets.
