Chief Science Officer | Regenerative Orthopedics & Sports Medicine (ROSM)
Dr. Mulvaney spent nearly a decade as a Navy SEAL before becoming a medical doctor. Now he’s pioneering treatments that are changing lives, one procedure at a time.
In a journey that has taken him from the front lines to the frontier of medicine, Dr. Mulvaney was a Navy SEAL officer for nine years and then a U.S. Army physician for the remainder of his 31-year military career. In addition to his current role at ROSM, he serves as a Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Mulvaney is board certified in both Sports Medicine and Pain Medicine. In 2008, he became the first Department of Defense physician credentialed in regenerative techniques, such as platelet-rich plasma and stem cell therapy for musculoskeletal and spine injuries.
Why do you consider yourself an explorer?
When I was a kid, I was disappointed that the globe was already mapped. What was left for me to explore? Medicine answered that question. Every day, I feel like I’m standing at the edge of a terra incognita—a frontier of unanswered questions and untapped treatments. I want to push back these frontiers and provide better treatments with a solid foundation in medical literature.
What is your breakthrough?
The treatment getting the most attention is the Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB), a precisely guided injection targeting a cluster of nerves in the neck. I have co-authored 17 peer-reviewed studies on its use for PTSD and anxiety and am the internationally recognized leader in the field.
The most recent randomized controlled trial I co-authored, conducted with The Ohio State University, found that adding SGB to standard PTSD therapy produced significant improvement that held out to one year. In the past year, my team and I published three studies showing SGB reduced traumatic brain injury symptoms by 50% over three months.
What is your philosophy?
I don’t mask pain; I strive to heal it. I focus on your own innate ability to heal, resulting in long-term improvements. This means using ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance to deliver regenerative therapies with precision—treatments designed to repair muscle, nerve, and spine injuries. The payoff is getting you moving again, which is critical to mental and physical health.
