Maryland has it all: mountains, rivers, the ocean, farmlands, and everything in between! Our beautiful landscape and unique terrain are two of the many things that make our state so amazing. Here are a few ways you can get outdoors to help celebrate and protect our little piece of planet Earth. Happy Earth Day!
Get active
Enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise outside. On Saturday, April 21st head to Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis for the third annual Run for Nature Earth Day 5K benefitting the Friends of Quiet Waters Park Nature Campaign. Run through beautiful wooded parkland and enjoy its beauty! Registration is $25 for adults and $20 for children. More information about the race is available at Fqwp.org
For a more laid-back activity, join the Annapolis Maritime Museum for Earth Day by the Bay at Back Creek Nature Park on Saturday, April 28th, 3–5 p.m. Engage with nature and learn about our ecosystem through crafts, activities, and games. Explore the waters, discover the animals that call the Chesapeake Bay home, and enjoy a live concert by Guava Jelly. Tickets are available at Whatsuptix.com.
Volunteer in your community
Big changes start with small actions and cleaning up your local environment is a great way to start. Get hands-on and help out at one of the many Earth Day cleanups. Participate in the GreenScape on Saturday, April 21st, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Now in its 27th year, GreenScape is a volunteer effort that encourages individuals and organizations to plant and maintain gardens in public spaces throughout Annapolis. You can learn more about GreenScape by visiting Annapols.gov/GreenScape
Queen Anne’s County will be hosting a countywide Earth Day roadside clean up event on Saturday, April 21 through Monday, April 23. Participate as an individual or bring friends and family along! You can sign up for a road at Qac.org.
Join Tuckahoe State Park on Saturday, April 21st, 9–11 a.m. for their Earth Day Challenge. Help beautify the park by planting trees, picking up trash, and completing citizen science and art projects. Once the work is done, participants get to enjoy a day on Tuckahoe’s high ropes course for free! More information about the event is available at Visitcaroline.org
Make small changes at home
It’s never too late to make your home a little eco-friendlier, and Earth Day is a great time to get started! Gather the family and put a recycling plan in place. Ditch the bottled water and invest in a reusable bottle instead. Maybe plant a garden, build a birdhouse, or make a compost bin. Pick up a few plants and some soil at Historic Londontown and Gardens’ annual plant sale on Saturday, April 21st, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Or, start small and attend one of their Earth Day Miniature Garden Workshops on Sunday, April 22nd, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. & 1:30–3 p.m. All the supplies you need to create your own beautiful, miniature garden are included. The event is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. You can register for the workshop here.
Looking for local and naturally grown herbs and veggies to plant in your garden? Homestead Gardens has partnered with Chesapeake Harvest to create a branded line of started plants for your home garden. The plants are sold in 100 percent biodegradable packing which naturally deteriorates in your garden or compost pile, creating less waste and more protection for the Chesapeake Bay watershed. You can purchase the plants at either of Homestead Gardens locations. For more information about Chesapeake Harvest visit ChesapeakeHarvest.com
