In his final game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds made sure to put on a show. He did just that with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter with his first of four rushing touchdowns, making him the all-time leader in NCAA career rushing touchdowns.
The senior was unable to eak the record in front of a strong contingent of friends and family in his home state of Tennessee when Navy knocked off the No. 13 Memphis Tigers 45-20 one week ago. That victory earned Navy its first appearance in the Top 25 rankings since the end of the 2004 season. The Midshipmen are currently ranked No. 20 in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
With Navy (8-1) leading SMU (1-9) 41-14, Reynolds was replaced by backup Tago Smith early in the fourth quarter. This was Reynolds' 15th game with at least three touchdowns, which is also an NCAA record.
Reynolds now has 81 career rushing touchdowns, putting him just two behind Montee Ball's NCAA record of 83 career total touchdowns. At Wisconsin, Ball ran for 77 touchdowns from 2009-2012.
Ball tweeted his congratulations to Reynolds after his record fell in Annapolis: "Huge S/O to Keenan Reynolds on setting the new rushing TD record! Enjoy it!!!"
Navy's 8-1 record is its best since 1963, when Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach led the Mids to a Cotton Bowl appearance. Navy also announced Saturday that it received a letter on Friday notifying them that Reynolds was a Heisman Trophy finalist candidate.
With the 55-14 victory, the Mids have won 19 of their last 23 games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and have scored 50 or more points five times since 2013. It's also the team's 20th game of at least 30 points and 10 game of at least 40 points in that span.
Navy is now 6-0 in the American Athletic Conference and travels to take on Tulsa, followed by a road matchup against No. 24 Houston on Friday, November 27.
