The Baltimore Ravens (1-1) earned their first win of the season in their home opener against the Cleveland Browns. The Ravens 14-6 victory is the team's eighth straight home opening victory and sixth straight home win against Cleveland. It was a special day in more ways than one for quarterback Joe Flacco. Not only was it his first regular season game in Baltimore as the reigning Super Bowl MVP, his wife gave birth to their second child just hours before the game. The Washington Redskins (0-2) showed they could not recover from their exhausting opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The defense gave up 580 yards to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in a 38-20 route. That is the fifth-most yards allowed in franchise history. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers showed no mercy on the Redskins, completing 34 of 42 passed for 480 yards and four touchdowns. Robert Griffin III went 26 of 40 for 320 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Alfred Morris ran 13 times for 107 yards and Pierre Garcon caught eight passes for 143 yards. The Baltimore Orioles (79-70) finished a 3-4 week against the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays. The O's are tied with the Yankees at 2.5 games back in the American League Wild Card chase. Last week, Chris Davis hit his 50th home run of the season, tying the team record held by Brady Anderson. That historic shot made him only the third player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and 40 doubles in the same season. Former Orioles Babe Ruth (1921) and Albert Belle (1995) were the others. The Washington Nationals (79-70) are one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, having won eight of their last nine games in an effort to clinch a Wild Card spot. On Sunday, center fielder Denard Span extended his hitting streak to 26 games while pitcher Jordan Zimmermann earned an NL-best 18th victory in an 11-2 romp over the Philadelphia Phillies. The team faces a crucial series at home against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves beginning with a doubleheader on Tuesday. Next game: vs. Atlanta Braves, September 17, 1:05 p.m.
The Maryland Terrapins (3-0) endured a bittersweet weekend when coach Randy Edsall earned a 32-21 victory in his first game back in Connecticut since leaving the Huskies to coach at College Park in 2011. However, the team lost cornerback Dexter McDougle for the season after playing arguably the best game of his tenure at Maryland. His shoulder injury effectively ends his career as a Terp. McDougle was also named the ACC's Defensive Back of the Week and teammate Marcus Whitfield earned ACC Linebacker of the Week for their performances against UCONN. The Navy Midshipmen (2-0) blasted the Delaware Blue Hens with a 51-7 win in front of an opening day record crowd of 36, 208 people. Navy tallied 591 yards of offense and quarterback Keenan Reynolds threw for 233 yards, the most by a Midshipman since Brian Broadwater in 2000. Next game: at Western Kentucky, September 28, 7 p.m.
The Washington Capitals kicked off their preseason Saturday with a 4-3 shootout win on the road against the Winnipeg Jets in the Kraft Hockeyville game at Yardmen Arena, home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Belleville Bulls. Jack Hillen, Stanislav Galiev and Troy Brouwer all scored in regulation with Mike Green winning the game in the fourth round of the shootout. On Tuesday, the team returns to Baltimore to face the Boston Bruins in the 2013 Baltimore Hockey Classic at 1st Mariner Arena. Next game: at Philadelphia Flyers, September 16, 7 p.m.
D.C. United (3-19-6) battled it out with the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-2 draw. Chris Pontius (7’) and Kyle Porter (84’) scored for the black and red. Next game: at New England Revolution, September 21, 7:30 p.m.
The MLL Champion Chesapeake Bayhawks have been aggressive in adjusting their roster so far this offseason. After trading John Grant, Jr. and Michael Simon to the Denver Outlaws for Brendan Mundorf, the team made another deal with MLL’s mile high team, sending Dom Sebatiani and the 8th overall pick in the 2014 Collegiate Draft in exchange for Brian Megill last week.
The Washington Mystics (17-17) clinched a playoff berth after winning their final three regular season games. The team faces the Atlanta Dream in a three-game conference semifinals series beginning Thursday night. Ivory Latta finished the regular season as the team’s leading scorer at 13.9 points and 4.4 assists per game. Crystal Langhorne led the team with 7.2 rebounds per game in the regular season.
