Dominic Fragman Street Stage 7:45-9:45 p.m.
brDominic Fragman performs on drums while muralists, Jeff Huntington and Jimi Daviesbrbr paint to the rhythms outside on the Street Stage 7:45-9:45 p.m. Dominic Fragman is quite possibly the best drummer I have ever seen in my life (this is coming from someone who has seen upwards of 300 concerts)! Dominic will be performing works of Classical pieces with drum set, guitar, and vocals. His powerfully dynamic playing is truly stunning. He plays the drums as a tonal instrument with a unique progressive percussive style that must be seen and heard. It is polyrhythmic with multidimensional tones and adventurous flourishes. Sometimes these flourishes are so expansive, they turn into an entire movement. Fragman studied under master drummer Paul F. Murphy and pianist Cecil Taylor. Fragman cites such influences as Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Max Roach. Our community is extremely lucky to have such an incredible talent and local treasure in Dominic Fragman! Fragman speaks on his training and innovative drumming style, “As a result of the time I have spent with Murphy and Taylor (his master music instructors), I have been placed in a lineage of documented innovators to the artistic canon.” Fragman is modest yet fully aware that he has the innate talent and more importantly, put in the hard work and dedication to denote his place in the musical landscape as such, a Kung Fu Master of Drums. Dominic Fragman is consciously developing his own mode of playing and presents himself as a solo drum set artist who develops the drum set as an instrument that functions beyond its percussive role. He is the next generation of trailblazing drummers and pushes the boundaries of rhythm exploring music from all angles with his instrument and free spirit.
Unified Jazz Ensemble Street Stage 6-7 p.m.
The Unified Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to bringing the best of jazz to audiences of all ages. Their group was founded in 1992, and engages listeners in innovative performances of jazz standards and original compositions. They specialize in acoustic jazz. I’ve been a long time fan of UJE for more than 15 years. They’ve had a residency at 49 West for a while now and you can catch them there every Tuesday night. To say this group has chops, is an understatement! Here is some background on each of the integral players which, unified make Annapolis’ best jazz ensemble.
Mike Noonan is a multi-instrumentalist, performing on vibraphone, marimba, piano, and trombone. An experienced composer and arranger, Mike is an Innovative Percussion mallet artist, and a two-time recipient of Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Awards. He has shared the stage with jazz greats Charles McPherson, Mundell Lowe, Dave Holland, Sam Rivers, and Buster Williams.
John Pineda plays upright bass. His solid, in-the-pocket style of playing gained him a far-reaching reputation. His sensitivity combined with a distinctive earthy groove make him a sought-after player wherever he goes. Recording artists Eddie Daniels and Steve Davis are among the many who have enlisted his talents.
Dominic Smith drummer and Maryland native has been a fixture on the local jazz scene for nearly 20 years. His hard swinging style, use of dynamics, and rhythmic subtleties have been used by many jazz notables such as Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, James Williams, and Phil Woods, to name a few. Mr. Smith has a Bachelor of Science in Jazz Performance from Towson University and has studied privately in New York City with Kenny Washington, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Ralph Peterson, Frank Malabe, Duduka Da Fonseca, Mike Clark, and Kim Plainfield.
Tbrim Stanley studied trumpet at Eastern Illinois University with Dr. W. Parker Melvin and improvisation with acclaimed pianist, Henry Butler. Tim is also a member of the Grammy winning Latin Jazz ensemble, Afro Bop Alliance. He is also a member of the United States Navy "Commodores" Jazz Ensemble. Tim has performed and/or recorded with Chris Potter, Jerry Bergonzi, Eddie Daniels, Dave Samuels, Arturo O'Farrill and other jazz talents.
Dean Rosenthal Street Stage 10:30 p.m.
Don’t miss Dean on Dylan! Dean Rosenthal performs his versions of Bob Dylan songs at the Fringe. Dean is a one-man band that knows what makes music great at its core, “you’ve just gotta feel it”. This year, Dean Rosenthal celebrated 40 years as a professional musician. You may have recently seen him as a surprise guest during the Kelly Bell Band Show at Quiet Waters Park playing alongside Carl Filipiak, Dean’s friend and national touring jazz-rock guitarist. Many hail Dean as the patriarch of the local music scene and you won’t want to miss this rock royalty show off how rich he is in talent. Here’s Dean on Dylan and his other musical influences from the April 2015 What’s Up? Annapolis Magazine interview, 15 Minutes With…, “… when I heard Bob Dylan [I] said, ‘Man! I’ve gotta do that!’ I dropped the bass, picked up an acoustic guitar and a harmonica rack, and a Bob Dylan songbook. My guitar style is still rooted around bass lines. There were a zillion guys playing guitar at that time but there were only a couple people playing slide. I never had dexterity in my fingers so I thought if I just move one finger around, I’ve got it licked! Lowell George and Ry Cooter are two of my guitar influences. Then I went back to listen to Muddy and Elmore and guys like that who played slide. I’ve been fortunate that the music I play is timeless. There are places that allow me to do what I do. I’ve been really lucky to live in this area.” To learn more about this Annapolis Music Star, check out Dean’s full interview from the April 2015 What’s Up? Annapolis Magazine here…
3rd Grade Friends Wiseman Stage 10:30 p.m.
3rd Grade Friends is Joe Martin (guitar and vocals) and Robin Eckman (drums) so named since they first met in 3rd Grade. All grown up now they are young at heart and still know how to make playful music. The power of two plus their endearing weird imaginations adds up to create a multitude of head bopping musical experiments. 3rd Grade Friends perform their brand of “Casual Math Rock”. Their music is not formulaic. It will make your ears bend in the best way. And don’t blink! Eckman is wicked fast on the drums. When asked how to describe their sound, Martin proudly boasts, “We sound like recess!”
Fast as Lightning K and L Stage 8-9 p.m.
Fast As Lightning is a rock band featuring some of the most talented young musicians in Annapolis! Performing music encompassing hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s, they'll also play their first original song Kat in the Hat, which was released on iTunes in March 2015. I especially love their version of Heart’s Barracuda. And when they play Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit they sound like tween prodigies. Check out these kids now. They are on their way to achieving world domination. If I were to look into my crystal ball, I would predict we would see them accepting their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2055.
