On December 31st, the city is ringing in 2012 with family activities, fireworks, dancing, and more fireworks. Take this opportunity to let someone else do the cooking at one of the downtown restaurants, and indulge in not-for-gifting shopping at some of the city's stores and boutiques.

The schedule for New Year's 2012 in Annapolis is as follows:

3 p.m.: Activities for the young and young at heart.

7 p.m.: Fireworks—the early show.

8 p.m.: Dance under the stars.

If, however, you're going to find yourself on the Shore for the last few moments of 2011, you've got quite the line-up from which to choose.

Rock Hall in Kent County is saluting the arrival of 2012 with the Rock Hall Crawl. As part of the event, the town will host the annual Hat Competition and Hat Parade at 6:45 p.m., and award prizes on Main Street at 7:30 p.m. in the form of $20.12 and 12 lbs. of rockfish.

At 11:45, you're encouraged to don your long johns, bundle up, and gather at the Bulkhead to await the new year with fireworks and the announcement of Fish's new name.

In Talbot County, Easton is playing host to First Night Talbot. There, venues throughout the town will hold a number of activities throughout the day, such as arts and crafts and dancing. Plus, you can catch performances by musicians, artists, jugglers, and more.

First Night Talbot culminates in two festive community parades and two crab drops. There's a 9 p.m. set for the early birds, and a traditional midnight countdown as well.

Prior to the event, tickets for First Night Talbot are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for children under five. You can buy them for $10 for adults and $5 for students at the door. See the event's website for a full schedule.

The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort in holding two DJ-hosted parties, and Jimmie & Sooks is having their New Year's Eve Blowout. Layton's Chance Winery is hosting a paired wine dinner with live music, Leaky Pete's Oyster & Wine bar will have live music, and Point Break Beach Bar will ring in the new year with a party, dancing, bar snacks, giveaways, and a free champagne toast at midnight.
