With an abundance of acclaimed music venues, Maryland has become one of the major music hubs on the East Coast. With so many great shows coming to town, it’s sometimes hard to keep track. For a full list of concerts coming to Maryland in April, check out our online calendar at Whatsupmag.com. In the meantime, here are a few bands and musicians headed our way in the coming month:
Dave Davies: Rams Head On Stage, April 9th
Dave Davies is best known as one of the founding members of legendary rock group The Kinks. For more than five decades, Davies’ experimental style and unique songwriting made him both a music pioneer and a rock-n-roll legend. Last spring, Davies and his son Russ released their collaborative album Open Road—a compilation of songs that perfectly molds together the two artists’ different eras and backgrounds in music.
In anticipation of his new album Decade, which will feature an assortment of unreleased solo material, Davies is hitting the road. The power trio consisting of Davies on guitar and lead vocals, bass player David Nolte, and drummer Dennis Diken of the Smithereens will be coming to Rams Head On Stage on Monday, April 9th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $46.50 and available here.
G. Love & Special Sauce: Light City, April 20th
G. Love and his rhythm section Special Sauce are celebrating 25 years of creating music together. Their newest album, Love Saves The Day, proves just how in sync the group has become over their 25 years performing together. G. Love’s sublime guitar playing and blues harmonica, paired with the electrifying funk of James Prescott’s upright bass and Jeffrey Clemens’ energizing drum work, results in a groovy and original blend of hip-hop and blues that’s guaranteed to make you dance.
G. Love and Special Sauce will be performing at Baltimore’s Light City Festival on April 20th at 10:30 p.m. The whole festival, including the concert, is free to attend. No tickets necessary! For more information visit Lightcity.org
Janis Ian: Avalon Theatre, April 27th
Janis Ian’s songwriting career spans back nearly five decades. She has received a total of 10 Grammy nominations in eight categories—her hit song “At Seventeen” earning her five of those nominations, more than any other solo female had received at the time. Ian’s demiurgic and daring songwriting has made her a folk-music icon. Her songs have been covered by an assortment of artists including Cher, John Mellencamp, Celine Dion, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson.
At 66 years old, she continues to tour, write songs, and record at her own Rude Girl Records label. Ian will be performing live at The Avalon Theatre on Friday, April 27th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 and available here.
Old Crow Medicine Show: The Anthem, April 28th
Old Crow Medicine Show is a contemporary band with a classic sound. Though the band has been together only 20 years, they’ve already earned themselves two Grammy awards, an induction as members of the Grand Ole Opry, and the RIAA’s Platinum certification for selling over 1,000,000 copies of their classic hit “Wagon Wheel.” With their emotional story-telling songwriting and nostalgic folk feel, OCMS offers a unique sound that appeals to listeners young and old.
Their newest album Volunteer will be released April 20th, just days before their D.C. show. You can experience Old Crow Medicine Show for yourself at The Anthem on Saturday, April 28th at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45-75 and available here.
