The weather is heating up, and so is Maryland’s music scene. With the busyness of the summer months approaching, it’s hard to keep track of all the great musicians and concerts coming to the area. For a full list of concerts coming to Maryland in May, check out our online calendar at Whatsupmag.com. In the meantime, here are a few bands and musicians headed our way in the coming month:
The Temptations & The Four Tops: MGM National Harbor, May 4th
Two of Motown’s greatest vocal groups take the stage together! The Temptations & The Four Tops have produced numerous R&B chart-toppers since entering the scene in the 1960s. The Temptations have had 43 top-ten hits between the ’60s and ’90s, earned three Grammys, and have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Four Tops have been inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy Hall of Fame, as well as won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.
The music legends will be performing their soulful classics at MGM National Harbor on Friday, May 4th, 8 p.m. Their performance will feature Temptations’ original member Otis Williams, and Four Tops’ original member Abdul “Duke” Fakir. Ticket prices vary and are available here.
Michael McDonald: Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, May 18th
Michael McDonald has spent over four decades in the music industry and is still making a lasting impression. McDonald began as a studio musician in the early ’70s, but his career took off when he became an integral part of Steely Dan. Not long after, McDonald was invited to join The Doobie Brothers where he served as singer, keyboardist, and songwriter for numerous Top 40 hits. His successful solo career throughout the ’80s and ’90s gave him the opportunity to work with many prominent figures in the music industry, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell.
Even after five Grammy wins, McDonald isn’t slowing down. Late last year, McDonald released his tenth studio album Wide Open and will be kicking off a promotional tour this summer. You can catch Michael McDonald at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Friday, May 18th, 8 p.m. Tickets start at $85 and are available here.
Jason Aldean: Merriweather Post Pavilion, May 24th
Jason Aldean has solidified his position as one of the 21st century’s biggest country artists. Since stepping onto the scene in the early 2000s, Aldean has had 19 No. One hits, more than 15 million total album sales, and has won two consecutive ACM Entertainer of the Year Awards. Aldean is setting out on his High Noon Neon Tour on May 10th, following the recent release of his eighth studio album, Rearview Town.
Aldean will be performing at Merriweather Post Pavilion with Luke Combs, Lauren Alain, and Dee Jay Silver on Thursday, May 24th, 7 p.m. Tickets start at $55 and are available here.
The BoDeans: Rams Head on Stage, May 20th
Over their 30-year musical career, the BoDeans have captivated audiences with their upbeat performances and universal adult alternative sound. Though the group is best known for their 1993 single “Closer To Free”, their success didn’t end there. The BoDeans have released 12 studio albums, with ten records that hit the Billboard Top 200 Chart.
While the BoDeans are famous for their high-energy shows, they’ve decided to play a handful of quieter, more intimate, shows featuring stripped-down versions of classic BoDeans songs. The BoDeans will be playing two shows at Rams Head on Stage this month. On Saturday, May 19th, the band will play an all ages matinee show at 12 p.m. Tickets are $45 and available here. Their second show, which is 21+, will be Sunday, May 20th, 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 and available here.
