Check out the best local events in our community and plan for a weekend of fun!
brShe closed the Pier Six show with her version of Simone’s Feeling Good , which you can find on the tribute album where she covers six songs. Unfortunately, she was over time and Pier Six cut the sound since it is an outdoor venue. She still finished the song and we could hear the music coming out of the stage monitors as the crowd hushed and calmly started making their way towards the stage, mesmerized. After the show, Hill signed autographs for nearly a half hour.
brBrandon Johnson started singing Killing Me Softly, Roberta Flack’s song that put Ms. Lauryn Hill on the map with the Fugees from The Score, their 1996 number one album (Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip Hop Charts). The Score was included on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2003.
brJohnson encouraged fans to sing along as his wife, Ayana took a video. See the video of Lauryn Hill’s fans singing in unison. Hill joined in and she was moved to tears.

brbrGiven what happened in Baltimore this past April, it was magical to see the true spirit of Baltimore in that moment – people of all walks of life united in song and their love of music, their love of a role model, a true artist who preaches one love, “I gotta find peace of mind… He says it’s impossible… But I know it’s possible… Free your mind… it’s so possible… I’m telling you it’s possible… every day’s another chance to get it right this time.”
Hot August Music Festival
Oregon Ridge Park, 13401 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030, Saturday, August 15th, 11a.m.-11 p.m., $59-178, 877-321-3378, Hotaugustmusicfestival.com.
brIt’s gonna be hot and it’s gonna be rockin’! The Hot August Music Festival in Cockeysville is August 15th at Oregon Ridge Park. The fun starts at 11 a.m. Local and national acts will perform including: Hollis Brown, Dennis Jones, June Star, Marah, Jarekus Singleton, Sligo Creek Stompers, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, The Revivalists, The Infamous Stringdusters, Shakey Graves, Railroad Earth, Punch Brothers, and Counting Crows.
Jarekus Singleton is the future of the Blues, at only 30 years old he has garnered rave reviews from Blues connoisseurs, “Jarekus Singleton is destined to be the next big name in the Blues world” – Blues & Rhythm Magazine (UK). Jarekus grew up on Gospel music and started playing bass guitar at nine years old in his grandfather’s church band. He fell in love with the Three Kings of Blues (B.B., Albert, and Freddie) and Stevie Ray Vaughan was also a huge influence. Listen in here… Refuse to Lose was released last May on the legendary Blues label, Alligator Records.
Shakey Graves is from Austin, Texas. The actor, Alejandro Rose-Garcia uses the moniker Shakey Graves as a musician playing original Alt-Folk music. You can hear the heartache and tumbleweeds in his tunes. You may have heard his song, Dearly Departed on the radio. It started gaining traction on radio stations such as WXPN out of Philadelphia and WTMD in Baltimore about a year ago, and now you can hear his music on our very own WRNR. Here is the video for Dearly Departed.
Punch Brothers’ The Phosphorescent Blues, their latest album is produced by the extraordinary T Bone Burnett. Having a producer of Burnett’s caliber produce your record is quite a coo. And this Contemporary Bluegrass Folk band is worthy of Burnett’s involvement on their fourth record. You may know the band’s mandolin player, Chris Thile from Nickel Creek. Here’s a video of the uber talented group playing I Blew it Off.
Counting Crows, the San Francisco Folk Rockers and Alternative giant of the 90s are still going strong with their latest album Somewhere Under Wonderland. They will be headlining Hot August Music Festival and something tells me the entire crowd of fans will sing along to Mr. Jones. Hopefully, you’ll be there to join in.

That’s a Wrap! What’s Up? Re-Cap: Ms. Lauryn Hill at Pier Six Pavilion
Ms. Lauryn Hill, 5 Time Grammy Winner in 1999 for Miseducation of Lauryn Hill performed at Pier Six Pavilion on Friday, August 7th to a crowd of adoring fans. She performed new arrangements of old tunes and showed off her rapid fire emcee skills. She wore all black with a ruffled skirt almost resembling a flamenco dancer topped with a stylish hat. She danced along during the second set after performing the first half of the show on an overstuffed white throne-like chair that is worthy of the Hip-Hop royalty that she is. In March 2015, The Library of Congress added Miseducation… as one of its annual 25 archived recordings. Requirements according to Library of Congress are the recording must be deemed: “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant and be at least 10 years old”. You can find Lauryn Hill featured on the recent Nina Simone tribute album entitled, Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone.brShe closed the Pier Six show with her version of Simone’s Feeling Good , which you can find on the tribute album where she covers six songs. Unfortunately, she was over time and Pier Six cut the sound since it is an outdoor venue.
