Summer is often associated with travel—beach trips, road trips, family vacations, and adventures waiting just beyond our front doors. But not all of us can pack a suitcase and escape whenever we want. Between work, family responsibilities, and everyday life, sometimes a getaway isn’t in the cards.
Thankfully, books offer a different kind of travel. They can transport us to sun-soaked beaches, charming small towns, glamorous coastlines, and even magical islands without ever leaving our favorite reading spot. A great summer read doesn’t just tell a story—it immerses us in a place, a feeling, and an experience that lets us forget our to-do lists for a little while.
Whether you’re reading by the pool, during a lunch break, or after the kids have gone to bed, these books deliver the perfect literary escape.
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry
Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen couldn’t be more different. She’s adventurous and spontaneous, while he’s quiet and practical. Despite their differences, they’ve spent one vacation together every year for a decade. When a misunderstanding causes a rift in their friendship, they stop speaking. Two years later, Poppy convinces Alex to take one last trip together, hoping to repair what was broken between them.
Emily Henry has a gift for making readers feel like they’re part of the journey. The snapshots of various vacations throughout the years create a sense of nostalgia and adventure, while the evolving relationship between Poppy and Alex keeps the pages turning. This book made me want to book a trip immediately—and maybe call an old friend, too.
Vacation Vibe: A cross-country road trip with your favorite travel companion.
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren
Anna Green thought her marriage to Liam Weston was nothing more than a convenient arrangement. Years later, Liam suddenly needs Anna to play the role of devoted wife so he can secure his inheritance. Their charade takes them to a luxurious private island where wealthy relatives, family drama, and unexpected chemistry complicate everything.
This is pure escapism in book form. The stunning tropical setting, lavish lifestyle, and romantic tension create the perfect vacation fantasy. Sometimes you pick up a book because you want to think deeply, and sometimes you pick one up because you want to be entertained. This one delivers exactly what a summer escape should.
Vacation Vibe: A luxury island resort where every day feels like paradise.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
Linus Baker lives a structured, predictable life working for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. When he’s sent to investigate an orphanage on a remote island, he expects to complete his assignment and return home. Instead, he finds a group of extraordinary children and a caretaker who challenge everything he thought he knew about acceptance, belonging, and happiness.
There are books that feel like a warm hug, and this is one of them. The island setting is whimsical and charming, but it’s the characters who truly make this story unforgettable. Reading it felt like taking a retreat from the real world and spending time in a place where kindness, hope, and understanding are the most important things.
Vacation Vibe: A peaceful island getaway filled with magic and wonder.
One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle
After the death of her mother, Katy Silver travels alone to Positano, Italy, on the trip they had planned to take together. While navigating her grief, she encounters a younger version of her mother and begins to see her not only as a parent but as a woman with dreams, flaws, and desires of her own.
This book is as much about healing as it is about travel. Rebecca Serle paints the Amalfi Coast so vividly that you’ll practically feel the sunshine on your skin and taste the pasta and gelato. It’s emotional, reflective, and beautifully written—a reminder that sometimes the journeys that change us most happen when we’re least expecting them.
Vacation Vibe: Long summer days along the Amalfi Coast filled with beauty and self-discovery.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Set during one unforgettable summer night in 1983, the novel follows the famous Riva siblings as they host their annual Malibu party. As guests arrive and tensions rise, long-buried family secrets begin to surface, culminating in a night none of them will ever forget.
Taylor Jenkins Reid has a remarkable ability to make a setting feel alive, and Malibu practically becomes a character in this story. The beaches, surf culture, celebrity glamour, and family drama create a cinematic reading experience. I could almost hear the waves crashing in the background while reading.
Vacation Vibe: Endless California summer nights by the ocean.
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
When a wedding disaster leaves the entire wedding party sick, Olive Torres and Ethan Thomas unexpectedly inherit a free honeymoon in Hawaii. The only catch? They can’t stand each other. Forced to spend time together in paradise, they discover that first impressions aren’t always accurate.
This remains one of my favorite recommendations for readers looking for a fun escape. It’s funny, romantic, and wonderfully easy to get lost in. The tropical setting adds an extra layer of vacation magic, making it the perfect book to toss into your beach bag or carry-on.
Vacation Vibe: An all-expenses-paid Hawaiian getaway with unexpected romance.
Summer is often associated with travel, but some of the best escapes can be found between the pages of a good book. Whether it’s a luxurious island resort, a sun-drenched Italian coastline, a magical island community, or a memorable road trip, these stories remind us that adventure doesn’t always require a plane ticket.
What I love most about escapist reads is their ability to transport us, even if only for a few hours. They give us a chance to step away from our routines, explore new places, and experience lives very different from our own—all from the comfort of our favorite reading spot.
