With quarterback Tago Smith out for the season due to a torn ACL suffered in last Saturday's season-opening win against Fordham, the Navy Midshipmen attempted to carry on as usual as they began American Athletic Conference play.
The Mids, whose captains Daniel Gonzales and Toneo Gulley wore jersey No. 2 to honor Smith, shot out to a 21-0 lead over UConn but subsequently allowed the Huskies to go on a 24-0 run to take the lead.
Smith's replacement Will Worth, who completed six passes for 130 yards, also ran in the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 3:08 remaining.
The Huskies refused to go away quietly in the second half and were knocking on the door during the game's final second. Down four with 17 seconds remaining in the game, Huskies running back Ron Johnson attempted to take the late lead but was stopped just before the goal line. UConn wasn't able to get another play off before the clock stuck zero.
The win was Navy's 12th straight at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and improved their conference record to 8-1 since joining the AAC in 2015.
Navy travels to Tulane next Saturday in a 7 p.m. affair, then enjoys a bye week before facing Air Force on the road on October 1. The Midshipmen return home October 8 to take on No. 6 Houston.
