Adamamary Karelly Sanchez-Martine
North Dorchester High School -- Soccer, Track
Nominated by her school principal, Adamamary Karelly Sanchez-Martinez (she goes by Karelly Sanchez) has demonstrated for four years why she was singled out to be an athlete worth watching.
Karelly has excelled at both soccer and track at North Dorchester High School. In track she runs the 400m relay, 300m hurdles, 200m relay, and the 800m relay. As a freshman, Karelly qualified to run in the 800m relay in regionals and in the state meet. She received her varsity letter as a sophomore and was captain of the team her junior and senior year. As a midfielder in soccer, she was selected to play on Baysides All Star Senior team, she was a three-year varsity starter, two-time North Bayside All Star, and assistant team captain her senior year. She also received the school’s “Legendary” Award, in which each year a graduating senior that has received the award passes it down to a junior to continue the legacy of great players. Head Coach (Soccer) Jonathan Catron agrees and describes her as self-motivated, hardworking, and a great team player.
In both of her sports, Karelly finds inspiration from her other team players and her coaches. “For track I enjoy working on my own and how everyone is always motivating each other. What sets them apart (soccer and track) from other sports is that I enjoy running—crazy right?!—and how they pushed my body.
“Varsity Coach Melvin Young’s love for track was what had motivated me to be a better athlete, I wanted to be better for him. Whenever I was losing a race I would look over to the finish line and he would always be smiling at me, as if to tell me, ‘I know you can do it, you can do anything.’ His love and passion was what motivated me when I didn’t believe in myself.”
The belief in herself that developed on the sports fields has translated to her life and future career. She is a member of the marching band (clarinet), the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and the Student Government Association. Karelly has a 3.7 grade point average and would like to major in chemistry in college. She would then like to enter a Pre-Med program and become a Physician’s Assistant. She has applied to the University Of Maryland, Notre Dame of Baltimore, and Salisbury. All have good health programs.
What also sets this teen apart is her keen sense of charity and giving back to the community:
“I look forward most to experiencing life, and giving back to it. I want to help people in need and give guidance like how others have done to me.”
