For over 10 years, Brandon Galloway has been involved in competitive sports. He began playing football at seven-years-old, and then two years later became a three-sport athlete by picking up ice hockey and lacrosse. Now, the senior from Kent Island High School is looking ahead to pursuing his athletics career in college.
Hailing from Grasonville, 17-year-old Galloway was influenced by several people in his life to play the three different sports, including his dad, his older other, and his neighbor. He’s been on the varsity football and ice hockey team since his junior year, and made varsity lacrosse during his sophomore year. In addition to playing for Kent Island, Galloway also played travel ice hockey for the Easton Ice Hawks and competed on the travel lacrosse teams Chesapeake Storm and Annapolis Hawks.
Galloway certainly stays busy year-round with his athletics. He says during the football season, he would practice four times a week and play in a game; for ice hockey, he would practice three times a week and play in two games on the weekend; and during lacrosse, he would practice at least three times a week, along with one or two games.
Galloway has also been awarded with multiple honors for his athletics. In football, he made first-team All-Bayside as a defensive utility player; in lacrosse, he made second-team All-Bayside as a midfielder; and for ice hockey, he made second-team All-Bayside for forward.
When it comes to school, Galloway refuses to let his busy athletic schedule affect his education. He’s taken two Advanced Placement courses every year since his sophomore year, maintaining a 3.54 cumulative GPA. Additionally, Galloway has received the Minds in Motion award several times, an honor for student-athletes who earn at least a 3.25 GPA while participating in a school-sponsored sport.
“I appreciate all the honors and awards that I have received,” he says. “They’re mostly coaches who vote for them and I am honored that they selected me.” In the fall, Galloway will be attending UMBC where he will continue his lacrosse career. He plans on majoring in business management, while minoring in marketing. Galloway says he chose UMBC because he really likes the campus, the academics are highly spoken of, and he likes the lacrosse coaching staff. He looks forward to starting lacrosse at the collegiate level.
“It will be a new experience, which I am excited for,” Galloway says. “I am very competitive and playing at a higher level [with other people who are just as competitive] will push me to do better.”
While he’s excited for college lacrosse, Galloway remains focused on his senior season at Kent Island with the goal of his team getting past Regionals this year. He also says that a big goal he has for himself is to make first-team All-Bayside this year.
“I am going to work harder to make sure I achieve that this year,” Galloway says confidently.
Although he’s getting ready for a new future in lacrosse, Galloway appreciates the relationships he has formed over the years through all his teams.
“I will never forget all the bonds that I have created with all my teammates that will last a lifetime.”
