Schools and offices all over are taking a hiatus for a few weeks, or even longer. Why not take advantage of being ‘stuck in the house’? Socially distance yourself into some “Me” time and start a new podcast, read a new book, light some candles and take a bath, or, grab a big glass of wine and curl up with What’s Up? Magazine! I am giving you permission to embrace the lazy and binge watch a show, or keep yourself active and find a fun YouTube workout video. Clean the house, reorganize, and donate. Any way you want to embrace this new found free time—you gets a free pass. To help you figure out what’s next, What’s Up Media has compiled a Staff Pick list of their favorites. Over the next few days, we will announce our favorites from books, to shows, to podcasts. Take a look and enjoy! Netflix:
- Self Made: Catch the first season of Self Made on Netflix. Octavia Spencer is Madam C.J. Walker, an African American washerwoman who builds a beauty empire and becomes the first female self-made millionaire.
- Outlander: Claire Randall, a World War II army nurse finds herself torn between two lives, and loves, when a mystical Scottish landmark hurls her 200 years into the past.
- The Blacklist: Ex-Government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington has been one of the globe’s most wanted fugitives for decades but now he has agreed to work with the FBI to catch his “blacklist” of mobsters, spies, and internal terrorists, on one condition: he must work with profiler Elizabeth Keen, but why?
- Better Call Saul: He wasn’t always Saul Goodman, ace attorney for chemist-turned-meth dealer Walter White. Six years before he begins to represent Alburquerque’s most notorious criminal, Goodman is Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney hustling to make a name for himself.
- Ragnarok: A small Norwegian town experiencing warm winters and violent downpours seems to be headed for another Ragnarok – unless somebody intervenes in time.
- Narcos: Mexico: This continuation of “Narcos” explores the origins of the modern drug way by going back to its roots, starting at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose, disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers.
- The Witcher: The witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world in which people often prove more wicked than beasts.
HBO:
- McMillions: Executive Producer Marky Mark puts together a six-part documentary series on the true story of how $24 million-dollars was stolen from the McDonald’s Monopoly game in the ‘90s, the mastermind behind the scam, and the intrepid FBI agents on his trail.
- Curb Your Enthusiasm: Larry David plays a version of himself on the improvised series. He faces a constant barrage of life’s little annoyances, which, in David’s sometimes well-meaning but terminally fumbling hands, don’t tend to stay small for long.
- The Outsider: An investigation at first seems like it would be simple and straightforward, but things change as it leads into the gruesome murder of a young boy by a seasoned cop. When an insidious, supernatural force edges its way into the case, it leads the investigation to question everything they believe in.
- Westworld: Westworld isn’t your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park’s guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged.
- Barry: Disillusioned at the thought of taking down another ‘mark’, depressed, low-level hit man Barry Berkman seeks a way out. When the Midwesterner reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an actor who is bedding a mobster’s wife, little does Barry know that the City of Angels may be his sanctuary.
- Divorce: Raising two children together and sharing more than 10 years of marriage have taken a toll on Frances, who is suddenly reevaluating her life and the strained relationship she has with her husband, Robert. Friends life Diane, who is successful and has no children, and Dallas, who has been both widowed and divorced, makes Frances wonder what she’s missed, or is missing.
Hulu
- Hilary: Catch never-before-seen footage of Hilary Clinton’s 2016 campaign alongside the biographical chapters of her life. Includes exclusive interviews with Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, friends, journalists, and Hilary herself and see how she became one of the most admired and vilified women in the world.
- Killing Eve: Eve’s life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be when she started. She is a bored, very smart, M15 security officer who is very deskbound. Villanelle is a very talented killer, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse, each as woman equally obsessed with the other as Eve is tasked with hunting down a psychopathic assassin.
- Atlanta: Atlanta is one of the top cities for young rappers looking to make a name for themselves in the business. Among those up-and-comers is Alfred Miles, a hot new artist who is trying to understand the line between real life and street life. He is managed by his cousin, Earn, who gets caught up in the local rap scene and his cousin's career after returning home to the ATL.
- Devs: This show focuses on a young software engineer named Lily Chan who works for Amaya, a cutting-edge tech company based in Silicon Valley. After her boyfriend Sergei’s apparent suicide, Lily suspects foul play and begins to investigate.
- Dave: “Dave” centers on a neurotic man in his late 20s who has convinced himself that he’s destined to be one of the best rappers of all time. Now he must convince his closest friends, because with their help, he actually might convince the world. This is based on the life of the rapper and comedian of Dave Burd, aka Lil Dicky.
- Boston Legal: The Boston law firm Crane, Poole and Schmidt deals in the often-high-priced world of civil litigation, where smarmy Alan Shore feels at home. Loose cannon Denny Crane has the run of the place, while other members of the firm try, with often dismal results, to keep him in check.
- Lodge 49: Looking for any semblance of the idyllic middle-class existence he knew before his father’s death and the family business collapsing, a charming, eternally optimistic ex-surfer named Dud stumbles into his life’s new path.
Amazon Prime
- Kidding: “Kidding” follows Jeff Pickles, a man who is iconic in children’s television. Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, is a pillar of kindness and wisdom to the impressionable minds of America’s youth and to the parents who grew up with him. When Mr. Pickles’ family begins to implode, his life starts to take a downward spiral.
- The Grand Tour: Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May travel the globe as the hosts of this Amazon original series. At each location, including Scotland, California, Nashville, and Dubai, the team films extraordinary things like becoming special forces soldiers at a secret training base, taking a powerful car on a test track, and going on the traditional gentleman’s tour of Italy.
- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: It’s the late 1950s and Miriam “Midge” Maisel has everything she has ever wanted, the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York’s Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent, she didn’t previously know she had, stand-up comedy.
