brAs Marylanders, we’re extremely lucky to live in such close proximity to the water, whether it’s bays, rivers, lakes, creeks, or even the Atlantic Ocean. Having nautical fun is so easy to do, especially in the summertime. This weekend epitomizes why we’re so fortunate to have this maritime access.br
In an effort to show how grateful we are for the water and the people that navigate it for a living, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is hosting its Fifth Annual Waterman’s Appreciation Day on Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. br
brThe event includes Maryland steamed crabs, beer, and other food and beverages as well as a “watermen’s rodeo” boat docking contest. Other events include a children’s Pot Pie rowing skiff competition, model boat building, and more. Live music from Bird Dog and the Road Kings will surely get the crowd on their feet and dancing. Proceeds benefit CBMM and the Talbot County Watermen’s Association.br
brThe town of Rock Hall has just about everything except Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley when it delights visitors Friday through Sunday with its yearly Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend, a three-day raider rally.br
brFriday’s events are highlighted by an evening rum tasting at the Inn at Osprey Point and sea shanty sing-a-long at the Bay Wolf Restaurant. Saturday’s entertainment includes the decorated dinghy parade at Rock Hall Harbor, pirate dinghy poker run, and Grand Buccaneers Ball at Waterman's Crab House while Sunday’s fun consists of a town-wide treasure hunt and kids and pets costume contest.br
brIf you’re into kayaking, this is the weekend for you. Discovery Village in Shady Side is offering free kayak rides on Thursday at 5 p.m. On site kayaks are limited so bring your own if you’d like. br
brGet your paddling arms ready for some full moon fun this Sunday during the Full Moon Paddle on Back Creek in Annapolis at 6:30 p.m. and the Full Moon Kayak from 3-8 p.m. at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary in Lothian. Not only do you get to see the moon at its brightest, you get to see some of the most serene parts of central Maryland via its waterways.br
brAre you a fan of music? Are you a fan of sailing? Combine both by boarding the Schooner Woodwind tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m. as musician Dirk Schwenk plays his favorite tunes. The Woodwind provides great joy to many, including Schwenk, who got married aboard the vessel in August of 1995.br
brFans of Alberg 30 boats will be on cloud nine with the Alberg 30 Association’s Parade of Sail, which takes off Saturday at 11 a.m. from the National Sailing Hall of Fame Annapolis for a ride through Ego Alley and the outer harbor of Annapolis. br
brTo celebrate 50 years of racing on the Chesapeake Bay, the Alberg 30 Association will hold the “Old Timers Race” off Eastport. The race is open to all former Alberg 30 owners and interested new owners, The Association will provide a boat to crew or skipper on. br
brFrom 8 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, the Cambridge Municipal Yacht Basin and The Maryland Saltwater Sport Fishing Association will host the 5th Annual Kids Fishing Derby at Long Wharf Park in Cambridge. The derby is open to kids aged 3-13 with fishing bait and tackle provided for free and prizes handed out at the conclusion of the event. This is a great event for moms and dads to bond with their kids and make the big catch.br
brOcean City also has two big events going on with the White Marlin Open continuing through Friday and the Ocean City Beach Classic - Ultimate Frisbee Tournament taking place on Saturday and Sunday. br
brNot water-related but just as important is Fiber Fest 2014, a three-day series of events celebrating fiber arts put on by the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES) in Denton. Check out the list of events taking place in Denton during the weekend:br
