While some people are Thanksgiving purists -- meaning that any desserts other than classic pumpkin, apple, or pecan pies are strictly outlawed -- others are willing to bend the rules a bit and try something new. That's where we come in to help! This pumpkin pie recipe uses apple butter, giving it a slightly fruity flavor while still retaining that special pumpkin taste everyone loves.
Ingredients
Spiced Apple-Pumpkin Pie
Serves 8
1 cup apple butter
1 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup packed own sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
3 eggs
3/4 cup evaporated milk
9-inch pie shell
Whipped cream and pecans, for garnish (optional)
Directions
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
Combine the apple butter, sugar, pumpkin, salt, and spices in a bowl, and then mix in the eggs. Slowly add the evaporated milk, mixing the batter well. Pour into the pie shell.
Set the pie on a foil-lined baking sheet, and place it into the oven. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the pie has set. Cool completely, and then serve with whipped cream and chopped pecans for garnish. The pie can be stored in the refrigerator until serving.
