The Digital Photography Club of Annapolis welcomes our first guest speaker of the year: Alison Harbaugh. Alison is the creator of the groundbreaking program for teenage girls called Fearless Girls Photography. Girls as young as 10-years old are empowered to be confident leaders, to own the person they are and the work they create through photography. Accompanied by three students from this year’s Fearless Girls Photography summer camps, Alison will be presenting the inspiration behind her vision, the projects and activities of Fearless camps and workshops (technical skill, design elements, editorial and artistic content, how to introduce yourself), and how lives are being changed through the world of DSLR cameras.
After earning a graphic design degree from Philadelphia University in 2001, Alison moved to Annapolis to begin her photography career as assistant sports photographer for the United States Naval Academy Athletic Association and the Baltimore Ravens. She realized her passion for storytelling in 2004 when she started working as a photojournalist for local newspapers, including our beloved Capital Gazette. Alison later started her own lifestyle photography company, Freckle Photography, in 2007 before integrating her, then, developing interest in filmmaking under a new umbrella. Today, Alison is the owner of Sugar Farm Productions, a multimedia production company focused on documentary-style work through photography and filmmaking.
The local community is near and dear to Alison’s heart. Over the years, her talent and dedication have given her opportunities to collaborate with Vision Workshops, the Inner West St. Association, UpStArt magazine, and more recently, Soul of the City, an initiative that fosters communication and collaboration between different groups in the city. All the while, Alison’s entrepreneurial spirit has kept a pulse on the power of community and collaboration. This dynamic inspired her in 2012 to concurrently co-found ArtFarm Annapolis, a 3,200 square foot studio space that supports children’s art classes, adult workshops, gallery shows, improv groups, live music, and many other art-related events. It was through ArtFarm Annapolis that Alison launched her Fearless Girls Photography program in 2014.
