Annapolis Science Cafe @ 49 West: "Oysters and Friends: The Bay Bottom’s Very Odd Neighborhood" by Mr. Chris Judy, Director, Shellfish Division, Maryland Department of Natural Resources
Oysters are very popular, both as a delicious meal and also as an important part of the Bay’s ecosystem. Oysters enrich the bay bottom by producing hard shell habitat and creating “live bottom” - a diverse community of fish, crabs, and numerous odd and intriguing creatures. Come and get acquainted with oysters and their interesting neighbors.
Chris Judy is the Shellfish Division Director at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, a position held for over 15 years. His early career was as a field biologist in the Shellfish Division and before, as an environmental educator with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. At DNR, the mission is to restore oysters for both their economic and ecological value. The Shellfish Division conducts many oyster projects in the Bay. More Oysters! He lives near the South River and enjoys sailing, hiking, 8 ball, and family.
