Learn about the Tilghman Family and how they navigated a difficult time during the Revolutionary War. Colonel Tench Tilghman was a patriot and George Washington’s longest-serving aide-de-camp (i.e., personal secretary) during the war. His father, James Tilghman, was a loyalist. His uncle, Matthew Tilghman, was the “father of the revolution in Maryland” and one of his brothers served in the British Navy during the war.
