Taking Care: Celebrating the Earth

Chestertown RiverArts 315 High Street Suite 106, Chestertown, Maryland 21620
Each April, RiverArts celebrates the community’s long tradition of environmental conservation by hosting an Earth-themed exhibit. Artists and poets are invited to submit work reflecting on the themes of taking care of and celebrating the Earth for this judged and juried show.
A portion of the proceeds from this exhibit will be donated to the Sassafrass Environmental Education Center at Turner’s Creek, a valuable Kent County institution lovingly directed by Wayne Gilchrest, in keeping with his conviction that “… kids are the soil from which wisdom grows.” Gilchrest has said “If you want a good crop of vegetables, you have to take care of your soil—healthy soil produces good food. Healthy children with good access to good teachers and real knowledge are fundamental for civilization.”
RiverArts is pleased to partner with ShoreRivers and Echo Hill Outdoor School to offer the Pat Herold Nielsen Poetry Prize in honor of the late Pat Herold Nielsen, a poet who was a founding member of the Chester River Association, one of ShoreRivers’ original legacy organizations. An accomplished poet and an award-winning filmmaker, Pat unceasingly directed her many talents toward engagement with protecting our environment. Poets agree to allow ShoreRivers permission to reproduce prize-winning poems for online or print publications, upon request.
We would also like to acknowledge and thank LaMotte Company, The Environmental Interest Group at Heron Point, The Mill of Kingstown, and Fresh Start Food and Garden, in Rock Hall for sponsoring the Visual Art awards.
