The Annapolis Chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association invites you to learn more about the importance of structuring narratives when writing, led by guest speaker, Tope Folarin. Flashbacks, multiple storylines, chronological order, and circular narrative structures are some of the options to develop your story when writing novels. And then there’s a handful of options to approach your plot development. What about point-of-view, emotional arcs, narrative arcs, motivations, and predicaments? How does culture influence both plot and characters? Having a roadmap of sorts to help support how each micro-decision impacts the story can be helpful. Guest speaker and award winning storyteller, Tope Folarin, will be walking us through the the importance of structuring narratives and how to connect the plethora of options in a way that doesn’t shut-down the writer, nor leave the reader lost.
Tope Folarin is a Nigerian-American writer based in Washington DC. He won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2013 and was shortlisted once again in 2016. He was also recently named to the Africa39 list of the most promising African writers under 40. He serves as Vice President of Content and Storytelling at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, and as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Policy Studies. He was educated at Morehouse College and the University of Oxford, where he earned two Masters degrees as a Rhodes Scholar.
