Hogshead Living History: Laundry Day
Stop by Hogshead on Saturday, September 30, and you’ll find out how laundry was done in the 1800’s!
Meet our presenter, Roberta Perkins, and learn about Maria Maynard, a free African American laundress who worked in Annapolis before the Civil War. See wooden tubs, washboards, irons, and soap – and see what it took to complete this laborious chore in the 19th century. Visitors can participate in washing small pieces of clothing!

About Our Presenter: Through her historical interpretations, Roberta Perkins brings to life the stories of free Black women in the early and mid-1800’s. Roberta started her career at Fort Delaware State Park in 2013, she researched, created, and presented Jane, a laundress, who worked for the Confederate officers held as prisoners there. Since then, she has portrayed laundresses at Handsell House and the Colonial Market Fair in Maryland.
