COLLEGE PARK, MD – Washington Redskins star tight end Vernon Davis will take over the grills at Nando’s in College Park on Saturday, June 1, 2019, flipping PERi-PERi chicken and serving dishes to fans. The College Park Nando’s is just blocks from the University of Maryland campus where Davis excelled on and off the football field in college.
Davis is a big fan of the South African restaurant known worldwide for its spicy flame-grilled chicken. He’s also a big philanthropist and all-around hometown hero in his native Washington, D.C. So, it makes sense that Nando’s will be donating all sales from the day (11 AM-10 PM) to the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, which promotes art education and art appreciation among youth from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Born and raised in Washington, Davis attended the University of Maryland, where he majored in studio art and played for the Terrapins football team before being selected by the San Francisco 49ers sixth overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. He played his first nine seasons in the league for the 49ers, before being traded in 2015 to the Denver Broncos, where he won his first Super Bowl championship. In 2016, Davis joined his hometown Washington Redskins.
But Davis’s success goes well beyond the playing field. In addition to having a deep passion for entrepreneurship, Davis also employs his celebrity as a philanthropist, helping to make a difference in the health and education of America's youth through his non-profit organization, the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts. Earlier this year, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared March 12 “Vernon Davis Day,” honoring Davis for serving as a role model to District children.
“We have always appreciated Vernon’s generosity in the community and especially his commitment to the arts. We are so proud to partner with Vernon to raise funds for at-risk youth,” said John Fisher, CEO of Nando’s PERi-PERi USA.
