Safety at Sea Seminar
Severn River Annapolis, Maryland

Rescue personnel, a helicopter, patrol craft, and sailing vessels from the Naval Academy and U.S. Coast Guard will converge on the Severn River in Annapolis on Saturday, March 29th, for a safety training seminar. The general public is invited to watch t he demonstrations. The hour-long activity will be produced off the seawall adjacent to Dewey Field. Afterwards, certain vessels will be docked and available for observation in nearby Santee Basin on Naval Academy grounds.
Originally conceived for USNA Midshipmen 44 years ago following a tragic onshore sailing race, the popular Safety-at-Sea Program is now available to all mariners and hosted by various organizations around the country. Certain midshipmen on the school’s sailing teams must aend, while private citizens also participate to qualify for certain coastal or onshore sailboat races. These demonstrations are open to the public at no charge
The aircraft and boats scheduled to participate in the safety demonstrations include:
• A United States Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter, based at Cape May, NJ air station. Observers will be able to watch as they demonstrate an on-water rescue of a person from a sailboat.
• A Coast Guard response boat, on station during the demonstrations and will receive dockside visitors afterwards in Santee Basin.
• Navy 44 Mark II Sail Training craft will demonstrate various techniques used in man-overboard situations.
• Other USNA training sailboats will deploy pyrotechnic and smoke signals, and deploy a self-inflating life rafts.
This portion of the Severn River will close during the demonstration but can be viewed from the Naval Academy’s seawall on Sims Road opposite Dewey Field from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29. (Visiting hours to the Naval Academy are sunrise to 5 p.m.) Afterwards, boats can be viewed up close at the docks in Santee Basin of Santee Road.
Visitors to the Naval Academy over the age of 18 must have a valid photo ID to gain entry. Visitors under the age of 21 who do not have a valid picture ID must be escorted by an adult with a valid form of identification. Anyone with a locally prepared DBIDS or a DOD credentials, including military retirees and dependents, may drive onto the Yard. Individuals without credentials may not ride onto the Yard with someone who has access privileges. All others will need to park outside the Academy and walk through Gates 1 or 8.
