Florence Price, composer
Award-winning pianist Lior Willinger presents a solo recital showcasing works by Marianna Martines, Fanny Mendelssohn, Marie Jaell, Teresa Carreno, and Florence Price.
Although representative piano works by women exist from each century, virtually none have entered the canon of classical repertory. At Peabody Conservatory, almost zero women composers are featured in recitals. The decision to include only women composers is an important step in both promoting inclusivity and bringing historically ignored piano works into the spotlight. The recital coincides with the statement put forth by the Baltimore Museum of Art to only obtain works by women for the next year, extending this vision across all areas of the arts.
The recital will feature the Maryland premiere of Fanny Mendelssohn’s Ostersonate, previously attributed to her brother Felix and now presented under her rightful name.
This recital is presented in fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts.
