St. John’s College will host TEDxStJohnsCollege on Saturday, January 18, 2020. Six students, three alumni, and one staff member of the College will present talks from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on the historic campus in downtown Annapolis. The event will be entirely student-led.
The theme of the event—“On Second Thought”—is a product of the Great Books Program offered by the College. One of the unique characteristics of the Program is its ability to transform the outlook of its students. Their thoughts, opinions, and notions evolve constantly with every book and big idea they explore. The resulting ability to concede by saying “on second thought...” is central to this event. Speakers are expected to discuss second thoughts that have impacted their lives—and the world.
TEDxStJohnsCollege will be the first of its kind for both Annapolis and the College. The event brings the global phenomenon of TEDx and Ideas Worth Spreading to its residents and hopes to continue the existing tradition of great ideas promoted by the College. Talks will span a variety of issues, from theoretical physics and cybersecurity to statecraft and intersectional feminism. The organizing committee, made up of seven students representing seven different countries, is just as diverse.
The College would like to invite members of the general public to attend TEDxStJohnsCollege. Seating is limited to 300 attendees.
